Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Abercombie.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am the manager of the only non alcoholic, tiki mocktail and kava/ elixir bar in the whole houston area. We are a botanicals bar serving tiki style mocktails, teas, coffees, frozen drinks and elixirs with extracts added to them upon request. Kava bars area dime a dozen in states like florida and california, but there are only a handfull in texas and only one in houston. I have been in the health and replacement food / beverage industry for over a decade having worked at carolines healthy eatery and being a certifed keto chef and catering service. This followed the path of helping people in recovery and people that need replacements for percriptions, alcohol and other substances. We carry sugar free options as well as some of the best k teas in the US all made in house. Kava bars are quickly popping up everywhere, providing a place where all are welcome. I schedule live music, tarot readings, themed party nights, crafting, painting, karaoke, trivia, pool tables, drag bingo, spiritual meet ups and more. I am in the business of creating inviting and welcoming spaces for all ages and types of people to get together and enjoy being social without pressure.. were there is a need for them.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Since there has not been alot of experience in Houston areas with kava and elixirs there is alot of educating first. I have trained a staff of 10 on hospitality and bartending with educateion on our products so each guest and gets the same experience and leaves knowing more than when they came in. The Government agencies are always trying to shut down certain substances that are not taxable to them so there has been challenges there as well. Since we are a non alcoholic bar we dont have the normal rules and laws but we have a separate set of our own. We are located in Old Town Spring, tx.. which is a tourist town so were thriving because of the travel industry as well as our regulars whom we love. Thanks to food and beverage promotional organizations in our area such as Nicks local eats, community impact, natural awakenings, social indoors, and others we have had lots of help getting the word out!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have been a nutritional meal prep service, catering service, herbalist, private chef, sugar free bartender, restaurant manager and and oil and gas operator…. this is by far the most interesting, challenging and rewarding career and oportunity ive had yet. I am proud to be helping those that need an alternative but want to be social and part of their community. I have a very supportive group of merchants and shop owners in Old Town spring that help make our town events and themed sip n shops possible so we can all thrive. It takes a village and im most proud to be a part of this village currently. We are a bar like NO other in the whole state.. and I have a crew like no other as well.
How do you think about luck?
I was lucky to fall into this business as my previous one was ending. Carolines healthy eatery and The Bomb Noms catering service was coming to a close due to economy changes and lifestyle changes. When the owners of the Elixir Lounge aproached me at just the right time to begin this journey. We are all lucky to have a great community here in Old Town Spring where we support each other and were bringing new and exciting things to the people. I have always found good people to do cool things with.. life is about quality experieces and making connections, not just money. Money is good too… so come spend some on us at the Elixir Lounge.
