Conversations with Cindy Ruiz Valencia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Ruiz Valencia.

Cindy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From Honduras to Leadership in Houston – My Journey as a Family Nurse Practitioner

Where It All Began

I was born and raised in Limón, Colón, Honduras—a beautiful coastal village where community, culture, and family shaped the foundation of who I am. From an early age, I was drawn to caring for others, even before I knew what nursing was.

Starting Over at Ten Years Old

-When I was ten, my family and I moved to the United States. It was a major change, but I brought with me the strength and warmth of my Honduran and Garifuna roots. I knew from early on that I wanted to do something meaningful with my life—something that gave back.

My First Step into Healthcare.

-After high school, I enrolled in a Medical Assistant program. I worked hard, and after my internship, the clinic where I trained hired me on the spot. I stayed there for eight years, learning, growing, and discovering just how much I loved the healthcare field.

“*That clinic wasn’t just my first job—it was my classroom, my proving ground, and where I met people who changed my life.*”

The Push That Changed Everything

-During those years, I was mentored by an incredible Cuban physician who saw potential in me before I saw it in myself. She encouraged me to go back to school and become a nurse. Her belief in me helped me take the leap—and I haven’t looked back since.

Balancing Nursing School and Motherhood

-Going back to school with a young daughter wasn’t easy, but I was never alone. My family stepped up in every way, from babysitting during my clinical rotations to cheering me on through late nights and long exams.

I earned my Associate Degree in Nursing and later my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, graduating magna cum laude both times. Every diploma I’ve earned represents more than academic success—it represents sacrifice, faith, and purpose.

2023 – A Year of Fulfillment

-In 2023, I completed my Master’s Degree in Nursing from Houston Christian University, specializing in Family Practice. I also became a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC).

After graduation, something truly special happened: one of my clinical mentors—the same person who had helped guide my training—offered me a position. I accepted with gratitude and pride.

Champions Point Family Clinic

-Today, I practice at Champions Point Family Clinic, where we are committed to affordable, high-quality care that treats every patient like family. I bring with me a background in pediatrics, acute care, Geriatrics, hospice, and palliative care, and I care for each patient with warmth, cultural humility, and a deep-rooted belief in treating the whole person—not just the condition.

“*We don’t just treat symptoms—we care for people. That’s the heart of what we do.*”

Giving Back to My Roots

-In one of the most fulfilling moments of my journey, I returned to Honduras with the Carolina Honduras Health Foundation for a medical mission. I was able to provide care to the very kind of community I came from. It was emotional, empowering, and a reminder of why I do what I do.

What’s Next?

-I’m passionate about mentorship, especially for young Latinas and Garifunas who dream of careers in medicine. I want to be the kind of leader who lifts others, the way others once lifted me. My vision includes advocating for inclusive, culturally aware care and bridging health disparities in underserved communities—both here and abroad.

“*If I can be proof that dreams rooted in humble beginnings can grow into purpose-driven careers, then I’ve done something that matters.*”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Balancing Nursing School and Motherhood

-Going back to school with a young daughter wasn’t easy, but I was never alone. My family stepped up in every way, from babysitting during my clinical rotations to cheering me on through late nights and long exams.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Family Nurse Practitioner currently practicing at Champions Point Family Clinic, where we are deeply committed to delivering affordable, high-quality healthcare to our community. My work is rooted in compassion, cultural humility, and a holistic approach that honors the body, mind, and spirit of every individual I serve.

I specialize in family practice with a clinical background that includes pediatrics, acute care, Geriatrics, hospice, and palliative care. My experience allows me to meet patients at all stages of life, providing continuity of care with empathy and respect. I am also proud to be an active member of the Texas Nurses Association and to have participated in medical missions in Honduras, where I had the chance to give back to the community that shaped me.

What I’m most proud of is the path that brought me here—from a small village in Limón, Colón, Honduras, to becoming a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) in the U.S. It hasn’t always been easy, but my story is proof that resilience, family support, and purpose can create meaningful change. I graduated magna cum laude in both my ADN and BSN programs and earned my MSN in 2023, immediately stepping into a role where I continue to grow and give back.

What sets me apart is not just my clinical training, but my lived experience. I connect with my patients through shared cultural understanding and genuine care. I don’t just treat conditions—I build relationships. I advocate for inclusive, culturally sensitive care and hope to inspire other Latinas and Garifuna women to pursue their own paths in the healthcare field.

This work is more than a career for me—it’s a calling. And I’m grateful every day to be living it.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories was walking barefoot along the sandy paths of my village in Limón, Colón, Honduras, just before sunset. The smell of the ocean, the sound of waves in the distance, and the love of my family —especially my late father—created a sense of peace and joy that still lives within me. I remember watching my mother cook over a wood fire, surrounded by family and the rich tradition of storytelling. Those simple moments—rooted in love, culture, and deep connection—taught me the true meaning of community and continue to shape the way I care for others today.
