Conversations with Courtney Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Phillips

Hi Courtney, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My mission and passion for interior design comes from my belief that, home is our sweetest retreat and yet our greatest platform.

As a child I grew up living all over the globe. Moving, traveling, and exploring the world with my family, I had firsthand exposure to the most beautiful environments filled with exquisite art and stunning architecture. As young as the age of four, I recall spending hours painting sights of recent travels, or pouring over the pages of my favorite Little Golden Book, Martha’s House by Edith Kunhardt, and as many art and design-filled books I could get my hands on. Our worldview and art-filled lifestyle continued as I grew and my passion for it gained momentum as I went on to study all forms of art. However, a problem arose I couldn’t decide which direction to go, I loved it all! Then I realized that interior design was like writing a symphony. You have to understand each instrument and what it can do and bring to the table. Then, you incorporate all the instruments together to make a beautiful piece that exudes emotion, harmony, and creativity. With interior design you touch and use every form of art. I was hooked!

My work as a designer seemed to run parallel to life as a mom of two boys and two dogs. Busy with both I wanted my work schedule to fit life’s demands, so in 2019, I opened my own interior design firm. Working on both commercial and residential projects, I’ve had the honor to collaborate with some of the most truly amazing clients and artisans. My approach comes from a blend of formal training and global life experiences, I love incorporating a nurturing sensibility into each project, striking a balance between aesthetics and practicality. My broad experiences and early creative exposure has inspired me to blend client aspirations with innovative design, creating custom interiors that mirror their unique personalities and lifestyles.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
With all custom projects, it’s not just about creating a vision, but having the means and team to bring the vision to fruition. I believe that you are only as good as your team. Finding the best trades and artisans to collaborate with can take a lot of time, but it is one of the most exciting and important aspects of my job.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As an interior designer, I specialize in tackling all sorts of projects, from commercial spaces to cozy residential homes. I embrace various design styles and needs, transforming everything from English farmhouses to stunning waterfront vacation homes. I take pride in listening to my clients and understanding their personalities and what luxury means to them, allowing me to adapt the design to feel just right. By helping my clients discover their personal style and seamlessly blending it with the architecture, I create spaces that strike a perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Networking has worked well for me. I believe you are only as good as your team. My advice is be selective! Invest time in sourcing and maintaining relationships with quality architects, contractors, and other trades and artisans. Find your people and support each other.
