Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Curry.
Craig, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey with photography began right here in Houston, where I was born and raised on the north side. From a young age, I found peace behind the lens, practicing photography while studying engineering at Texas A&M University. It took courage to start sharing my photos with the public, but I believe in embracing our hidden talents, as the saying goes, “Embarrassment is the cost of entry. If you aren’t willing to look like a foolish beginner, you’ll never become a graceful master.” Let’s embrace our passions while we can.
By day, I navigate the tech world as a consultant, but I am also passionate about capturing the beauty and authenticity of life through photography. Whether it’s the joy of a wedding day, the energy of an event, or the everyday moments that make up our lives, I thrive in capturing these moments. I believe that every person has a unique story worth telling, and I’m honored to be entrusted with the task of turning those stories into visual masterpieces.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey into photography has been full of twists and turns. Growing up, my focus was directed toward academics and pursuing a traditional career path—thanks for the guidance, Mom and Dad. While that foundation served me well, I wasn’t encouraged to explore my creative side until seventh grade. That all changed when I took a photography class at Roberson Middle School, where Mrs. GoBoncan sparked something inside me.
She was the first person who taught me how to use a camera, and believe it or not, photography was just an elective I chose to check off my schedule (let’s keep that secret between us). To my surprise, I found myself enjoying it even more than my biggest passion at the time—soccer. I’ll never forget the thrill of developing film and experimenting with camera settings, all at such a young age.
Although I only recently rediscovered my love for photography last year, I owe so much to Mrs. GoBoncan for lighting that creative fire and being the first person in my life to truly encourage my artistic side.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My main job is as an internal consultant at a technology company. In this role, I’ve honed my greatest strength: problem-solving. Since the work is project-based, no two weeks look the same, and I love the variety. I get to collaborate with stakeholders from across the business, tackling diverse challenges to make their day-to-day work easier and more effective.
This problem-solving mindset is what sets me apart as a photographer. The skills I use every day in my consulting role have greatly influenced my growth in photography. Just last year, I decided to fully embrace photography as a passion project. I love capturing raw emotion, whether in a studio or outdoors at a location my clients choose. I approach every shoot as a new puzzle to solve, with light being my main challenge. Finding the best way to manipulate lighting to enhance my subject is a creative process I’ve come to thrive on. Every shoot is a chance to improve, and I truly enjoy the excitement of conquering a fresh “problem.”
Here in Houston, I’m best known for my studio work and shoots at unique local spots. My specialties include family, engagement, graduation, and birthday sessions, and I’m passionate about creating meaningful moments for my clients to cherish.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I envision AI playing an even bigger role in the photography industry. Manual editing will become less practical as AI tools make it possible to recreate what once took hours and significant resources with just a fraction of the effort. Personally, I’m a big advocate for tools like Evoto, which make photo editing incredibly seamless. As someone who grew up using Photoshop and other traditional editing tools, I’ve noticed how AI is already being integrated into their features.
While this technological shift excites me, I also see it reshaping the industry—particularly devaluing the retouching field. AI will empower photographers to apply quick and effective edits on their own, streamlining workflows and making the creative process more accessible than ever.
