Conversations with Curran Guiney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Curran Guiney

Hi Curran, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been deeply passionate about music. From a young age, I started playing guitar, which opened the door to exploring various genres and immersing myself in the world of sound. Music has always been a central influence in my life.

After college, I took a job in North Dakota, but my mind kept circling back to music and how I could contribute to the creative community. I had the idea of creating a space that would give musicians the attention and quality that’s often missing in studios. I wanted to build something that supports everyday artists, not just big names. That’s when the vision for Band Barracks came to life—a place offering high-quality, affordable, 24/7 rehearsal, DJ, Recording, and Podcast studios. We’re now working on expanding our offerings and are now offering lessons, gear rental, and serve beverages and food at our retail center.

We eventually found the perfect location: a historic 1956 Southwestern Bell building that was completely abandoned—no roof, no water, no sewage. It was a massive undertaking to restore it, but now it’s a thriving center for musical creativity. The hard work has paid off, and we’re proud of how far we’ve come, with many exciting changes still ahead.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and our biggest challenge was getting our building, which was constructed in 1956, up and running. When we first found it, it was completely abandoned—junk everywhere, no electricity, no running water—it was a massive undertaking. We threw ourselves into the renovation, with nothing but hope and a vision. We planned for it, worked hard, and hoped people would come, but there was no guarantee.

The hard work paid off in more ways than we imagined. Watching the community grow after the word got out has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey. The music scene in Houston is alive and thriving, and it’s been amazing to see people come together at Band Barracks, collaborating and pushing their creativity to new heights. It’s really inspiring to see how our space has become a hub for musicians, DJs, and artists to connect, work, and elevate the local music scene. The journey has been far from easy, but the incredible growth of this community makes every challenge worth it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
