Conversations with Darren Bennett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darren Bennett.

Hi Darren, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I am a young man originally from Baltimore, Maryland that has always been interested in fashion. I have always been the youngest and I have always been the one my family looked at as the one to make the family proud. Coming from the city, I come from it is very easy to go down the wrong path and that is exactly where I started to head, so I moved to Houston in 2018.

I began to attend Blinn College and moved on to Prairie View A&M University becoming the first male in my family to attend college. Obtaining a degree just did not seem like my only calling and I was determined to figure out what else God put me on this earth to do. I remember it was late at night and I was lying down with a thought running through my head to start a clothing brand but the question was what will I call it? Then a name popped up in my head “Améir” so I looked up the meaning and from Arabic translation it means prince.

Immediately I thought it was perfect and after speaking to family and friends I decided to get to work and make my vision a reality. The meaning behind Améir is the reason I make my clothing with the highest quality because I want all of my customers to feel like royalty when they are wearing my clothing. I cannot thank God, my family, and my friends enough for what I have been able to accomplish. A lot of struggle, a lot of setbacks, and a lot of thinking “am I good enough” is the reason I am here today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth by a long shot. My biggest struggles starting my business were trying to figure out where to get my clothes made, how I would make designs, and what will make me stand out from others.

Now that I have my business up and running struggles still continue such as getting people to recognize my brand and trying to figure out what to do next with my designs. It is a constant struggle but every struggle comes with a lesson.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I do is design clothing for my clothing brand and manage it and I also attend college pursuing a degree in Kinesiology. I am mostly known for my brand Améir Couture mainly at my college Prairie View A&M University but also throughout Houston. I am most proud of how well I am doing with designing clothes after just 1 and 1/2 years of being in this business.

Lastly what sets me apart from others is my vision and the thousands of design ideas that flow through my brain on a daily basis.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My social skills are definitely the most important. With those skills, I have been able to connect with many of my customers and leave a lasting impression on them so that they become returning customers.
