Today we’d like to introduce you to David Hutson.
Hi David, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I found my passion for drumming at the tender age of three. I would beat on any and everything I could find around the house, from pots and pans to magazines and boxes. It didn’t matter to me as long as I could do what I had a passion for naturally. My talent was far more advanced than most nine-year-old and my parents were well aware of this. They enrolled me in many drum lessons, camps and programs. By the age of twelve, I was living my dream as I became the drummer of my home church, the First Missionary Baptist Church of Anahuac, Texas. By the time I reached middle school, I was an advanced percussionist. I continued to drum throughout my middle school years as the Percussion section leader and was a member of the M.B. Smiley High School drumline.
After graduating high school in 2008, I decided to continue doing what I loved and accepted a percussion scholarship to march with the great Prairie View A&M University Marching Strom drum line formerly known as “The Box.” I also have the honor of playing for/serving for many other groups, artists and organizations including: Company “Hutson Percussion,” Church “Above & Beyond Fellowship” Spring, Texas, Gospel Group “Serenity Psalms: 147”, Gospel Group “Michael Dixon & Viszion,” Company Band “Live Out Loud Band,” Rock Band “10000 Chiefs”, Percussion Group “Lone Star Choppaz,” Performance Band “Unbiased Live Band, Artist “Chans & friends,” Artist “Erikahnocturnal,” Artist “Quinton Sampson,” Artist “Andre Sloan, to name a few. I have been fortunate enough live in Southeast Asia the year of 2018, working as independent musician with a Live Entertainment Company entitled “El-live Production. I’ve recently crossed over into theatre/broadway by working with company Artist Lounge Live from Chicago. But my greatest pleasure comes from working as an independent contractor in Houston Independent School District instructing Percussion classes for enrichment programs. Although most of my time is spent with a pair of Vater 7A drum sticks in my hand, I’m your everyday average Joe who enjoys family time, supporting my two younger siblings, hanging/living life with my significant other, helping others, and fishing trips with my father & also promoting health, happiness, & prosperity to each and every individual that I come in contact with. I consider this talent I have a gift that God has blessed me with, I’m cherishing every minute of it, I️ serve with it, and I️ plan to share it with the world.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The life of an entrepreneur and or independent contractor is a very tough road. It’s the ups and downs, highs and lows of day-to-day struggles or thoughts of if you’re doing the right, is this for you, should you get a corporate job with benefits and vacations building someone else’s dream and neglecting your own. It’s presenting yourself or your business as an entity which includes you pretty much selling yourself and welcoming people with open arms and some networks and it people you may be attached to that doesn’t have your best interest at heart. Life is full of lessons. I feel you if you have a passion you figure out what it is, learn, cater to it, practice, master it, then share it and it’ll come back lucrative and ultimate beneficial in many aspect.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a percussionist, musician, artist, upcoming producer, and independent contractor. My work consist mostly of serving, performing, entertainment, music productions, private lessons, album recording, producing etc. I specialize in being true to who I am and what I’m capable of abs elevating each and every day. I’m most proud of my brother and I producing runway music for fashion show raising funds for a company that stops sex trafficking, overseas accomplishments building an international network, adding broadway to my resume, and landing a cymbal endorsement deal with Domain Cymbals in addition a discount endorsement deal with Predator Percussion for my brother and I Hutson Percussion company/brand.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
😆 I would much rather say blessed then luck. Growing up and out through school, life and what not not really knowing your purpose and or what it is you desire to do, or knowing your place in the world. Then only to finding your passion, your gift, your purpose, being impactful, intentional and shining your light to the best of your ability is where I am with everything.
