Conversations with Dean Remmi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Remmi

Hi Dean, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been creating and bringing ideas to life ever since I was a child. Whether it was drawing in my the margins of my school books or making random sounds with objects around the house, I was always doing something to entertain myself and keep from boredom. Once I got into high school I took art classes seriously and really got into color theory. Unfortunately I took a 6 year break from creating after dealing with someone committing suicide close to me and didn’t start again until 2016. I started painting again and met my ex wife around the same time, I felt motivated and happy and was painting regularly while going to school and working full time. In 2021 I got my heart broken and went through a divorce that crushed me internally, painting and creating was the therapy I needed to save me from my depression. I use my art to share a message that hopefully helps people feel less alone in their own struggles and through color and music I want to motivate others to find a creativeness in themselves.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been a lot of emotional up and downs. One of the biggest challenges I have experienced is motivating my self to create through my depression and anxiety. So often I want to lay on the floor in my dark room and rot away. On my worst days I find my self searching for any reason to not engage with my emotions and stay numb. However, the friends and family in my life that genuinely care and are supportive have gotten me over so many hills and the continue to be a driving force behind me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a painter, DJ and designer, I have a couple paintings and murals around the city. My favorites are at Devine Shine on the East End and at Trash Panda on the North Side.
