Today we’d like to introduce you to Galen Robinson.
Hi Galen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had got the idea to start my clothing company from Lanny Smith (Active Faith sports, Actively Black). He came and spoke to us my senior year of college. He basically said to find something else outside of your particular sport that will make money, that you also enjoy doing. Soon after, I came up with the idea of Substantial. The slogan for Substantial is “Find Your Purpose.” That was something I thought would be relatable for a variety of different people. When I came up with the idea, I couldn’t sell any products while I was in college due to specific rules, so I had to wait until after I graduated to start selling merchandise. I was preparing for my first year of professional basketball & I was working out 3 times a day. I used to deliver shirts/hats in between workouts, and I would eat at the end of the day. I lost so much weight but it was the only means of income that I had at the time. It truly taught me the importance of the grind.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggles are that I play basketball in different countries, so at times I have to be hands-off with my company (ie shipping). I am a very hands-on type of person and It doesn’t feel right when I’m not the one in charge of everything. Nobody takes care of your stuff better than you!

I am a professional basketball player. I am most proud of my dedication, hard work, and my ability to overcome obstacles. I feel like those 3 qualities are what allow me to still play professionally. I have played in the G-League, Germany, & Mexico.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My mama has been instrumental in everything that I do. Any success that I have in any part of my life, she deserves the credit. She instilled confidence in me at a young age and made me believe I could do anything I set my mind to.
