Conversations with Hank Schyma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hank Schyma

Hi Hank, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Prior to social media, many film makers, musicians, artists and such were largely dependent on stamps of approval by big companies, record labels and brands to be seen and heard. I feel that nowadays anybody with talent, vision and the will to grind has a shot at success in the arts. The big guys no longer hold all the keys. If I had to rely on someone or something else to get me and market me, I’d likely still be crashing on random couches.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I remember at the bottom of my music career thinking this isn’t so bad. I made enough money to own a decent car and a couple vintage guitars. We always found a way to get to the next town and learned to stretch a dollar far. As part of the rag proletariat you find yourself sleeping in your car on Tuesday and then a bourgie hotel on Wednesday. Never really knowing what is around the corner is exciting and the girls are pretty damn cute. When you travel to less fortunate countries you appreciate how rich even this Bohemian lifestyle is.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a musician, snake wrangling photographer and adventurer but I’m probably most known for my tornado chasing videos on YouTube. There’s an awful lot to be grateful for, but discovering a new Transient Luminous Event (TLE) is up there. Transient Luminous Events are large scale electrical discharges that occur above thunderstorms. In 2019 Paul M Smith and I discovered a brief aurora-like green glow preceding a red sprite event. We named it a green ghost.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people who know me as a musician seem surprised to learn I chase tornadoes. People in the storm chasing community often seem surprised to find I’m a working musician. They’re all surprised that I love snuggling with rattlesnakes.
