Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Williams.
Hi Jamie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was fortunate enough to know by high school that I wanted to be a therapist. By that time, I had gone through several childhood and adolescent dilemmas and was more than enamored with human behavior. My parents divorced when I was in middle school, and I went to a therapist that was less than helpful. I went through several of my own identity/existential crises, unbeknownst to me at the time, as I was on my way to finding my true passion and purpose in life.
Left to my own devices as a rebellious teenager, I made it to college by the grace of God. I majored in Psychology and minored in Child and Family Studies at Arizona State University. I entered the field of helping at this time, working with Seriously Mentally Ill individuals in my hometown. As a 21-year-old, not even college graduate, I had the privilege of working with the most vulnerable populations during this time. As I ventured out destined to “save the world,” I also worked in alternative schools and with children with a range of intellectual and developmental disabilities.
After graduating from Argosy University with a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling, I moved to Texas. As my own family grew, I spent time teaching in public schools and working in community mental health agencies. These experiences left me feeling disenchanted with the limitations I was left with in working with the clients I served. On a whim, I left that work and started Prosperity Counseling Services in 2020. What started in a 10×10 office with myself as the only employee has grown into a much larger 2,000 sqft office space with over 15 therapists on the team! We specialize in treating trauma, anxiety, and depression from a developmental and attachment-focused perspective. Our therapists are trained in empirically-based therapeutic interventions, and we pride ourselves on not being “traditional” therapists. I am so blessed to be living out my dream as a wounded healer.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Starting your own business is tough! Especially during Covid. I was fortunate enough to have family and friends that were supportive in my endeavors and who believed in my crazy dream. I have battled through my own personal healing as a wounded healer and love seeing the look on my client’s face when I tell them that I have my own therapist too!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my role as a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and the owner and founder of Prosperity Counseling Services, I do many things, and I love each and every one of them! I supervise the license of several associate therapists and love departing knowledge on the next generation of therapists. We also partner with several local universities, and I get the privilege of introducing many counseling students to the real-life world of working with clients.
I primarily work with clients ages 15+ that struggle with posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, relational and self-worth issues. I specialize in using integrative treatments, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), neurofeedback, parts work, Jungian Analysis, and Integrative Somatic Parts Work. I do not offer short-term, solution-focused, and brief therapy. When clients call and say, “I’d like to learn some coping skills,” I advise them of the latest and greatest websites and YouTube videos that describe the such. Most of my clients engage in a long-term therapeutic journey of healing. The intricate layers of our psyche and personhood are best understood through meaningful self-exploration with the help of a non-biased and professionally trained therapist (me!). Through self-compassion and intentional reflection and analysis, I believe in the possibility of not just change- but transformation.
I believe that what sets myself and my colleagues at Prosperity Counseling Services apart is that we are not interested in checking off boxes of symptoms and giving our clients band-aid solutions. Many clients that seek services from us have done that already.
To bloom into the fullest possible version of our individual selves requires not only overcoming our personal splits and wounds but also our familial and social wounding- the ways in which our experiences in life, with our families and world have impeded our healthy growth. The difficulty of that task requires our honesty with ourselves and our therapist and a willingness to let go of our current self to make room for something truly new. This is difficult but bountiful work.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I tend to be an open book, so this is a hard question to answer! I think many people are surprised to find out that I can actually be quite the introvert and enjoy spending time working out and reading. My job encourages me to be the face of a brand, putting my neck out there quite a lot. While this comes very natural to me, I also quite enjoy snuggling in my bed with a good book!
