Conversations with Jenny Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Nguyen.

Hi Jenny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Thank you for giving me a chance to share my career journey. When I graduated from Highschool, as an 18 years old young girl, I did not know what the next step would be for me. So, I decided to learn makeup because I love Art and Beauty. After a few years of learning and improving my skills, I started working as a professional makeup artist in 2012 and I specialize in Bridal makeup. Let me tell you, I really, really love my job! I love seeing my beautiful clients on their wedding days. I love seeing how happy they are when they see themselves in the mirror after every makeup session. It makes me happy when my clients tell me that my work makes them feel prettier and more confident because I put my heart into my work and I’m happy that they love and appreciate it too.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a makeup artist that has 11 years in the beauty industry, I am honest to say that it was not an easy road. The first reason is this career is very expensive with a lot of expenses that we might not be able to get back when we first start as a new makeup artist on the market because cosmetics are costly and they always have an expiration date. It’s not a good idea to keep using them after 6months to one or two years, depending on the type of products. I threw a lot of cosmetics that were expired and products that did not give the best quality to my clients. The second reason that makes it hard is finding your first few clients who will trust you and let you do makeup on their big day which only happens once in a lifetime. I used to do bridal makeup for free when I just started. Then, I charged a very low price to get more clients. I also had to purchase tickets to go to different workshops to learn new techniques and trends. Those are expenses that I knew I could not get back in a short period of time but everything was for the future which is Now. The third reason is the time that a make artist has to put into this career. If anyone wants to become a makeup artist, I just want them to keep in mind that they will spend most of the weekends with clients at their wedding location, instead of spending the weekend with family. My schedule always starts very early morning, which is from 3:00 am until 6:00 pm on Saturday or Sunday. Despite all of the struggling, I still wanted to keep going because I fell in love with this career. After 2 years of hard work, I finally put my name out there and have been receiving a lot of trust, love, and support from my wonderful clients. I can’t thank everyone enough.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in Bridal makeup and I am so passionate about it. I am proud that I did not give up on this career every time I failed or was discouraged because I had to spend a lot of my time away from family and invested my money on something I didn’t know how it would be in the future. What sets me apart from others is that I always set good intentions into everything I do. I do it because I love it and I want the best outcome which will benefit everyone around me. When I do makeup, I call it “custom makeup” because I don’t like to do the same makeup look for everyone. I always communicate with my clients, listen to their concerns and things that they love to see on them before I start. In my eyes, makeup is an art and it should not be the same every time because we have different facial features, lifestyles, and mindsets. Therefore, the makeup look should help clients elevate their look but still embrace their uniqueness.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I haven’t been to a lot of cities but I can say that I love Houston. I love how people are very outgoing and you can find so many talented artists in Houston. It is definitely a great place for us to network and learn. Plus, I think Houston is one of the most affordable cities to compare with other places around the US. I think traffics is the thing that I like the least about our city. 🙂
