Conversations with Jessica Peralta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Peralta.

Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I feel my story begins where most do, at home. I am the oldest of two children in a first-generation Latinx household. The two themes that truly molded who I am today were drive and responsibility.

The drive to do for my family as they have done for me kept me going through grade school, overcoming the pressure of applying to colleges, and daring to apply for a Master’s degree program when I thought I only had the potential to only get through one program. The desire to make something of myself was no easy task. However, once I discovered this career, I found what I was searching for my whole life, purpose and a way to help people the way I’m meant to.

My dad taught me if you think about your future, that makes you responsible. As long as I can remember, I would worry about what is to become of me. How would I provide for myself? What am I meant to do for my career? These were questions that were necessary to have but at the same time could be overwhelming for any kid to ask.

These two themes followed me to my graduate years and have been wonderful companions to get me to where I am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel the road has been long. Particular struggles I came across would have to be the fact of making a decision about several different things without guaranteeing any results. When we embark on the journey of establishing our life, nothing is certain. The choices we make are in hope of making something concrete and our own.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an LPC- Associate (therapist). I work with a little bit of everything, ranging from adults, couples, and teens. I truly enjoy working with individual and how they interact with their world and the connections in them.

I always tell my clients we have little to no control of the actions of others or what may happen around us, but what we do have control of is how we choose to react to them. I guess I can I specialize in connection…

I am most proud of what clients have accomplished. My work consists of building others with the strength that they bring to the table, I am simply a stepping stone on that journey.

What sets me apart from others? I’ve been told an array of things, but the one that resonates the most is being genuine in all of my interactions.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The industry that I work in is always changing. I believe that is the only consistent thing about it.

My hope is that it continues to change towards a direction of more awareness and resources for our community.
