Conversations with John Gentry

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Gentry.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I joined the Army in January of 2009 as an Infantryman. I went to basic training at Ft. Benning, GA, and trained under Charlie Co. 2-54. In late April of 2009, I joined my unit, 5th Brigade-2nd Infantry Division, under the 1-17th Infantry Battalion (Stryker Unit). A month later, I found myself deployed to Afghanistan where we found ourselves in some of the most intense battles. We went many places, but the two most deadly would have to be our first major conflict in Arghandab Valley outside of Khandar and a major conflict in a joint operation in the Helmand province. I returned to Ft. Lewis in June of 2010 and left the Army in 2012.

I’ve always been a singer. When I was younger, I would sneak into bars at 15 and sing karaoke for people, and I always had a blast doing it. Perks of coming from a small town. Over the years, I tried out for shows on tv like The Voice but never made, unfortunately. That never brought me down; it only inspired to become better. I started learning to play guitar from a from a friend of my named John Berry in 2017. He also gave me vocal lessons, and we would do mock recordings in his studio. Till this day is one of my biggest supporters.

We will fast forward to 2021. I was found one evening at karaoke in Cleveland, Tx. by a promotions company called PWR (Piney Wood Rooters), and they gave me my first leg up. Aaron Holmes was my artist manager then and taught me a lot about the music industry, including helping me hone my guitar and singing skills. PWR helped me release my first two singles called Lonely Road and Hope in early 2023. You never forget where you started. You never forget the people and fans that help you get where you are going. My band is moving at quicker pace than I realized, and I couldn’t be happier.

I had the privilege of opening up for Texas Artist and legend Josh Ward in September of 2022 and Nashville Artist Tyler Jay shortly after that. I played in the Cattlebarn for Terry Bradshaw’s ranch at the Houston rodeo. I’ll be playing the Fort Worth Stockyards at the Rhinestone Saloon in July and September of this year. Things are certainly looking bright, and I couldn’t have done it without my incredible band members (Luke Weston: Lead Guitar, John Gordy: Bass, and Garrett Martin: Drummer) and support from my ever-growing fans.

I am on all major music platforms and social media. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. I always make time to talk to people.

I love this life; I love playing music, and I love continuing to learn and grow as a Country Music Artist.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always ups and downs in the music industry. Would I say it’s been an extremely smooth road. No, but when you are doing something you love, and it’s meshes with your very soul, you do everything you can to maintain your stride and achieve your goals. For every no you get, there is always someone who is willing give you a break.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a project scheduler in the oil and gas industry. I work for an engineering firm in Katy, Tx. I’m proud of my ability to work hard and continue learning from those that have much more experience than I do. Nobody in life knows everything, and it’s always a great accomplishment when you learn something new. The minute you think you know it all is the moment you will fail.
