Conversations with Jordan Underwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Underwood

Hi Jordan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Design and decorating have always been in my blood, shaping the way I see the world. Even as a kid, I had a knack for imagining spaces coming to life, with each detail falling perfectly into place in my mind. I remember being mesmerized by the homes in movies—their holiday lights, cozy decor, and festive spirit. The moment the film ended, I’d spring into action, rearranging furniture and adding little touches of my own, driven by this creative impulse that wouldn’t rest. My parents would walk in, puzzled by the sudden transformation, and I’d just laugh and say, “Wait until you see what I have in mind.”

I truly discovered my passion for design during my time as a musical theatre performer. While being on stage was exhilarating, it was the backstage magic that drew me in—bringing entire worlds to life with every prop and set piece. I thrived on creating environments that transported people, whether it was a winter wonderland or a far-off land. It felt like an escape, an opportunity to use my hands and craft something tangible out of pure imagination.

This love for creating magical settings extended to my holiday decorating. When I was 17, I built an elaborate gingerbread holiday display, complete with miniature lights and handcrafted details. I spent hours shaping the candy, baking the gingerbread, and adding icing to resemble snowy rooftops, losing myself in the process of bringing the scene to life. It was more than just decoration; it was about building something that evoked warmth, joy, and wonder. That’s what holiday design means to me—transforming spaces to capture the magic of the season.

Whether it’s a stage, a room, or a holiday display, my passion for design remains the same. I’m always striving to create experiences that stir emotions and tell stories. For me, every project is a chance to bring a bit of that holiday magic into everyday life, using my hands to turn visions into reality and spaces into unforgettable memories.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up, my creativity often set me apart, but not always in a good way. I was the kid who saw things differently, who would rather be rearranging rooms or sketching designs than doing what most kids my age were interested in. Because of that, I faced a lot of bullying. Other students didn’t understand my interests or relate to the things I was passionate about. They would make fun of me for my ideas and the way I expressed myself, and it left me feeling isolated and misunderstood.

The bullying made an already challenging time even harder, especially when my family was struggling after my mother’s cancer diagnosis. It felt like I was constantly being knocked down, not just by the responsibilities at home but also by the social pressures at school. I had to navigate the weight of household responsibilities while facing ridicule from my peers, making me feel like I didn’t fit in anywhere.

These experiences taught me resilience, but they also came with a lot of pain. I had to find ways to stay true to myself and pursue what I loved, even when it felt like the world was against me. Those early challenges pushed me to embrace my uniqueness rather than shy away from it, and they shaped me into someone who can face obstacles head-on, no matter how tough they may seem.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a business honors student at the University of Houston, I’ve had the opportunity to be actively involved in various organizations, including student government. Being part of these groups allowed me to take on leadership roles, plan events, and bring creative visions to life through design. Organizing these events gave me the chance to combine my passion for creativity with practical skills, like budgeting, project management, and teamwork.

My goal is to bring this blend of creativity and business acumen into the corporate world. I’m eager to learn, grow, and expand my understanding of financial stability, not just for myself, but also to help businesses and communities thrive. I believe that a strong foundation in finance will enable me to combine my design skills with a strategic approach, allowing me to make a meaningful impact wherever I go.

What were you like growing up?
From a young age, I’ve always embraced the spotlight with boldness and confidence. Whether I was on stage performing in musical theatre or taking charge of a group project, I relished being the star of the show. I never shied away from expressing myself or showcasing my talents. This innate confidence has been a driving force in my life, empowering me to pursue my passions without hesitation.

Being in the limelight taught me the importance of self-expression and authenticity. I learned to trust my instincts and take risks, both creatively and personally. This mindset has helped me navigate challenges with resilience, allowing me to stand firm in my beliefs and showcase my creativity in everything I do. I firmly believe that confidence is contagious, and by embodying that energy, I’ve inspired others to embrace their uniqueness as well. Whether it’s in design, event planning, or any endeavor I take on, I approach every opportunity with the same boldness that has always defined me.
