Conversations with Juan Montemayor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Montemayor

Hi Juan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I figured out I could draw when I was in 4th grade and I always looked up to my dad and uncles art. My interest for tattooing began at the age of 16 after one of my neighbors a few doors down showed me my very first tattoo machine.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s always been up and down. Everything looks so easy to do yet so hard when actually doing it. I was self taught for the most part. I got to hang out at shops and would set up and break down, but was always just looking at the homies to get the schooling I needed to apply it to my work in the long run. But for sure to answer your question a struggle lol.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a tattoo artist based out of Houston, TX going on 13 years on February 7th. I specialize in Chicano Fineline Tattoos very old nostalgic imagery things that would remind you of your tio, grandma , your parents growing up or even just self expressing feelings through the art. Not sure what I’m know for but everyone tells me I got the nicest hyna tattoos in town lol. The thing I’m most proud of I would say are some of the events I’ve been able to offer the community trying to set the bar high! To showcase what Chicanoism is, I feel like I’ve done a good job at bringing our people la raza together!!! Not to sure what sets me apart from everyone , I’d say I’m a pretty nice vato and humble I love to help other people prosper and see them succeed in whatever endeavors they might have!! So just being caring I guess you can say.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Im always open to work with local homies!! I usually do t shirt designs, logos, simple things that I can use my artistic skills on. You can always reach out to us at my website it’s pretty easy. (CANTFAKETHAFUNK.com) As far as people going out of there way to support I would say come get tattooed by me and the crew at Ofrenda Studio we’d love to meet everyone who loves good tattoos and chill vibes it’s always a good time at the shop so don’t be shy let’s get you looking fly!!
