Conversations with Kara Torres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Torres.

Hi Kara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was 15, I got my first paycheck from my summer job and went and bought a Nikon camera. I took that camera everywhere and took photos of everything! Fast forward 11 years and my husband and I welcomed our son into the world in July 2020. He really became my inspiration to dust off my camera and start taking photos again. I loved documenting every moment and milestone of his first year and wanted to be able to do that for other people so in October of 2021, I decided to finally turn my hobby into a small business and created my Facebook page, Mirrored Lens: Photos by Kara. I started getting booked by people in the community almost immediately and ended up having a very successful holiday season. Since then my page and clientele have continued to grow and I’ve been very fortunate to stay consistently booked this year.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were definitely some bumps in the beginning and rookie mistakes were made at my early sessions, but you learn from it and move on! Those experiences have helped me grow and become a better photographer. I love having a creative outlet where there’s always something new to learn and skills to gain!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a family and portrait photographer who loves capturing special moments and milestones for my clients. Whether it’s maternity, birthdays, engagements or weddings, I am so happy I get to create beautiful photos that they will look back on forever.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I love spending my spare time thrifting for photo props! Most of my best mini-session props are thrifted gems or clearance steals and I’m always searching the Facebook marketplace for treasures. Finding deals instead of paying retail helps keep my prices affordable and accessible for the average family and I love it!
