Today we’d like to introduce you to Katya Du Pond.
Hi Katya, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Mexico City by Mexican mother and Colombian father. Raised by my grandparents mostly creativity was something I discovered since early age. Finding ways to create my own toys and ways to have fun with my brother. Singing and the arts was always present in my family. But since I was a little child, I liked drawing everything around me, on napkins or paper or on my school notes. Doodling and daydreaming and observant of my surroundings I developed an eye for beauty and was always mesmerized by the simple things, from insects to a sunset. I took some painting classes that made me fall in love with it even more. Dreaming on being a painter but told there was no future there, acting and singing was a passion too…but also, not the best choice back then. Therefore, I had to. Look at art as a hobby and for a career, my best next choice was the program at the Beauty Arts in my city Queretaro for Visual Arts with graphic design. But quickly into the program I realized it was not for me, too structured, too clean; I enjoy getting paint all over me and get my hands into the materials. Quickly, I switched to plastic Arts specialty, sculpture and paint. There, I found my passion. Later, I married and had to move to USA, where I was able to study at the Art Institute of Houston the program for Interior Design. I worked as a designer always incorporating the creative aspects of plastic arts achieving even more unique designs. Then in 2005, I became a mother for the first time, the best work of art! Later 2007, with my second daughter. Definitely the art of motherhood has been my biggest achievement. But I stayed active in creating stages, backdrops, and props for events and plays. Until one day 4 years ago, I decided to show my art pieces, a piece of my soul to my followers on Facebook. The response was amazing, and someone spotted me and encouraged me to start my artistic career more formally, she took me and mentored me into my first solo exhibition and to paint more and more. Exhibiting in places come Atlanta, Miami Art Basel, New York, Dubai, Dallas, and of course Houston and the Woodlands.
Then it became a dream to have my own studio, my gallery space, I walked the hallways of Silver Street studios many times saying “One day I’ll have my studio here” and after many years I was able to be part of the amazing artists at Silver Street at the Sawyer Yards in the Art District.
Now, my technique has grown; I have made a couple of murals in the city and businesses, I have acquired a few collectors along the way, have taught many students of all ages, created Art Nights at. My studio and always with a lot of projects ahead.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are always challenges: Being a woman and mother is hard to dedicate full time to, and the fact that I started later in life into the world of entrepreneurship and independence.
But I believe that in the midst of struggles and necessities creativity flourishes even more. is like painting with a limited pallet; you have to become more creative
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Latin paintress. Fine art artist. Muralist and concept creator for murals and spaces. I am known for my inspirational pieces full of movement and intensity, with romantic color pallets. I create a mix of figurative with expressionism. I would say my choice of colors and compositions.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
That I dreamed with being a famous actress and or singer.
