Today we’d like to introduce you to LaToya Smith.
Hi LaToya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began as a fine artist several years ago in Dayton, Ohio. After opening my first Creative studio with a partner and then being forced to close as often happens in a struggling economy; I came to Houston Texas to further my reach as an Artist and Graphic Designer in 2014. Blue Prolific Studios was established in 2018 after graduating from The Art Institute of Houston. It began as a way to create opportunities for myself and other freelance graphic designers. The industry is limited in the area when it comes to fair pay and enjoying creativity.
Joining the Chamber of Commerce, networking with previous professors and securing clients such as Memorial Highschool, City Place Marriott, and others provided return clients and the word of mouth needed to become credible and build. When the pandemic occurred it created a new restraint because this meant limited contact and nearly no means of networking generating clients. I countered this by creating the Prolific Expo, an Artist and Small business event. We are holding the next one to collaborate and support the fellow artists and small businesses on June 24th.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The largest setback was the Pandemic. As a new business, I took a huge hit. My clients were now at a stall in their progression and there for so was Blue Prolific Studios. As I mentioned before creating the Expo helped overcome some of those struggles.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Blue Prolific Studios is known for marketing and brand design for small businesses as well as custom products such as trade show items, shoes, and more. We also produce fine art, murals and special services for events.
What were you like growing up?
I was a military child so I moved around the country. I spent most of my time being forced to adapt and start a new. Drawing was my specialty from a very young age. I have been ambitiously creative since 10.
