Conversations with Mariana Lozano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariana Lozano.

Hi Mariana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Photography has always been one of my passions, I learned how passionate I was about it when I first picked up a Nikon D610 in high school. Learning the components, inner workings and fundamentals of my new muse further solidified my interest and came to me naturally. The only thing stopping me from pursuing my passion of becoming a professional photographer was my fear of failure.

In August 2017, I quit my full-time job as a retail manager to focus on my mental health. During my time off, I ended up running out of money and reluctantly went on a job search in retail. Unfortunately at the time I couldn’t find a job, and ended up jobless and broke by December 2017.

During this tumultuous time, I had no other choice but to pursue my lifelong dream and decided to start my photography business Mid-December. I had no choice but to make sure my business worked; Failure was not an option.

I started out my business by bootstrapping and offering free sessions, so that I could build a portfolio. Shortly thereafter I started charging just enough to cover my bills and by February 2018, I finally started making a profit!

With the money I profited, I attended nationwide workshops (virtual and in-person alike), investing in marketing material and networked with other photographers so that I could perfect my craft/brand. I’ve become very eclectic by drawing inspiration from different sources and til’ this day, I am constantly learning new tips, tricks and new concepts.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, There have been so many days where I’ve just wanted to give up, but one of the biggest struggles I’ve had to overcome is being a people pleaser.

I desperately wanted everyone to like me or like my work. However, over the years I’ve learned that I am not for everyone and neither is my art.
I’ve learned that a client will want to work with me because they truly value my work.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Houston area photographer that has explored in many different subsets of photography. I have come to specialize in portraits and elopements, and am known for capturing candid and intimate moments.

When I first started, I thought I was a bright and airy photographer; After some time passed, I thought I was a dark and moody photographer.

Now 4 years later, I wouldn’t even know what my editing style would be classified as, I just know that it’s my editing style.

Suffice it to say, this is what I am most proud of and sets me apart from others; My originality and style.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
As an introvert, it’s hard for me to walk up to someone at a networking event. However, I quickly learned that I had to get over that.

I would advise to not be afraid to reach out and ask for help, whether it’s at networking events or simply DM’ing a creative you admire. Some other helpful tips I would suggest is to offer to work as an assistant or shadow them, and to not get discouraged if you come across someone who says no.

Not everyone is willing to help; If they say “no” just brush it off and look for help elsewhere.
