Conversations with Mary St Dizier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary St Dizier.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?

I actually started my rowing journey as a member at another studio. I loved it so much that after about a year, I decided to try coaching — not realizing just how much went into it. Coaching wasn’t just about teaching technique; it was about learning how to motivate people, connect with them, and help them believe in themselves. I went through training and quickly discovered how meaningful that role could be.

I coached for four years and truly found my passion there. Then the studio I worked for made the decision to close. While that was a difficult moment, it also became a turning point. I knew my story with rowing wasn’t over. Instead of walking away, I decided to take everything I had learned as a member and a coach and create something of my own.

It took a full year of planning, building, and perseverance, but Crew 1 Rowing finally opened its doors. What started as a love for rowing turned into a community-driven studio built on encouragement, accessibility, and resilience. Looking back, every step — even the hard ones — led me exactly where I was meant to be.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges was realizing just how much goes into opening and running a studio beyond coaching. I went from focusing on members and classes to learning about leases, build-outs, equipment, permits, scheduling, marketing, and finances — often all at the same time. It was a steep learning curve.

Another major obstacle was the timeline. What I thought would be a smooth process turned into a full year of delays, unexpected costs, and constant problem-solving. There were moments where it felt overwhelming, especially coming out of a studio closure and trying to rebuild from scratch.

On a personal level, stepping into the role of owner required a mindset shift. I had to trust myself not just as a coach, but as a leader and business owner. Learning to make tough decisions, ask for help, and stay resilient through uncertainty was challenging but necessary.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the owner and head coach of Crew 1 Rowing, a boutique indoor rowing studio in Spring, Texas. I specialize in coach-led, low-impact, full-body workouts that are designed for all fitness levels. My background as both a member and a coach shaped how I approach training — with a strong focus on proper technique, intentional programming, and meeting people where they are.

What I’m most known for is creating a welcoming, supportive environment where people feel confident walking through the doors, regardless of their experience or fitness level. Rowing can feel intimidating, so I place a lot of emphasis on education, encouragement, and community. Classes are structured, but always adaptable, allowing members to challenge themselves safely and progress at their own pace.

What I’m most proud of is the community we’ve built. Crew 1 Rowing isn’t just a workout space — it’s a place where milestones are celebrated, relationships are formed, and people show up for each other. Seeing members gain confidence, return after injuries, or accomplish things they never thought possible is incredibly rewarding.

What sets me apart is that Crew 1 Rowing was built from lived experience. I’ve been the new member, the coach on the floor, and now the owner. Every decision is made with empathy, intention, and a deep understanding of what members truly need. That perspective shapes everything we do — and it’s what makes Crew 1 Rowing feel different the moment you walk in.
