Today we’d like to introduce you to Mercedes Vega.
Hi Mercedes, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Up until the end of high school, I didn’t look at art as anything more than a hobby; I used it as a way to visually interpret how I view the world around me. After talking to an art professor about different art careers, I realized that this was the right path for me. From there, I pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in Digital. Since then, I have been working as an independent artist while showcasing in various galleries both domestic and abroad.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was far from it! From artist blocks to being swamped with work to everything else in between, I couldn’t seem to get a break. In these situations, it either took me a very long time to finish my paintings, or I wasn’t able to work on it at all. It was very discouraging, to say the least. Despite these challenges, I persevered to continue to work on my art any chance I got, whether that be working on it for only five minutes or just being able to submit work for a gallery.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Much of my work stems from personal life experiences, both positive and negative. I’ve always struggled to properly articulate what I went through, let alone comprehend it. Art, to me, was always a language I could use to visually translate everything. Throughout this journey, I have been able to experiment with different mediums, themes, and styles. Although my focus is Surrealism, I have been able to learn a plethora of knowledge that I’ve been able to incorporate into my work.
Overall, I’m proud that I have been able to redirect any struggles I’ve dealt with into works of art that others can connect and relate to, as well as find an outlet to help cope with these issues the best way I knew how to.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
As of now, it’s not anything specific; I take inspiration from everything around me, whether it’s something I find on TikTok, Pinterest, Instagram, or books. Sometimes, I may find a podcast giving advice on something that I’m going through. Other times, it may be a book showcasing a painting that I fall in love with, giving me ideas for my next piece.
