Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Smith.
Hi Mia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello everyone! My name is Mia (Mya) Smith; born & raised in Galveston, TX & that’s where my love for modeling began. I would model at church and at community events. I also grew up watching America’s Next Top Model and I remember not seeing any models that were plus size. Modeling has been a passion of mine for about 10 years and to be completely honest, watching ANTM, I started to think that my dream of modeling was unobtainable. After graduating high school, I moved to Huntsville where I attended Sam Houston State University. At Sam, I participated in several modeling gigs, all runway shows. Which again, lacked plus size models! That’s when I knew there was room for a new niche. I consider myself to be a Body Positive model. I believe that body positivity is for EVERYBody.
Since graduating from college. I’ve worked full time with one of my other passions; animals. I’ve been in the veterinary field for 5 years now. However, that has never detoured me. I would have a Photoshoot every other weekend with different photographers to get a feel of different artists. I’ve attended model workshops as well to perfect my craft. I’ve always had “the walk” but I believe in there’s always room to grow. Last July, I attended a casting call for a modeling production show. The casting director and CEO told us that they were seeing 400 models that day, and only selecting 15!! I was one of the 15. That’s the top 3.75% of models that attended. The upcoming modeling production show is this March 2022 and will be held in Hollywood, CA. I’m beyond excited about that opportunity! I’m also grateful to be here telling my story, so thank you Voyage Houston!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I remember in college being selected for a casting call and I was in the back getting ready on show day. One of the designers that selected me didn’t have clothes big enough for me. It was so embarrassing y’all.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
“Honey” is my modeling/stage name. I’m a body-positive model. I attend runway shows, & I’m known for my print modeling. I believe that body positivity is for everybody! That includes everyone and every body type. I love quoting RuPaul, “if you don’t love yourself, how are going to love someone else”. I also participate with brands for sponsorship and I’ve been a brand ambassador as well.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Being at peace. I enjoy being at home because I’m a dog mom! I love cuddling with my dog, relaxing, watching movies, doing some online shopping.
Then my besties come over and we continue the same pattern, just with tequila.
