Conversations with Mikayla Mae

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Mae.

Mikayla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I gravitated towards creating as a kid, and it always stuck with me. I feel the most myself when I create. Being a creative is one of the traits I’m most proud of. My grandmother always encouraged me to write, draw and paint, and even sing at one point… And In school I did really well in the arts as well. Creating was something I just always knew I wanted to be involved in.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think what I struggled with the most was trusting my gut when it came to my craft. Not creating because I was afraid that what I was trying to convey wouldn’t be truly understood, and also thinking no one would care. I had to understand that it was okay to be vulnerable even if I didn’t know how that vulnerability would be reciprocated. I feel deeply, but not loudly. My art is away for me to express myself at the end of the day, it’s for me, and if anyone relates to it that’s great… but it’s not the main reason why I share my craft.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been dipping my feet in all sorts of mediums to be honest. While I love drawing and painting, I’m still super passionate about learning and understanding other mediums. I took a print making class recently, and a design class to hone in on basic fundamentals in order to apply different techniques to my daily creations. It was honestly just fun to learn again. I’m proud of myself for not always chasing perfection when it comes to my craft and enjoying the process more freely.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy? My love for learning, and my appreciation for others experiences. Honestly, some of my happiest moments have been at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Taking an afternoon walk around the galleries, or having in-depth conversations about pieces and exhibits… discussing in those moments how the rooms and pieces make me and those with me feel. I also just love to be in a gallery. I love the feeling you get walking into a museum and taking in how the space has been curated and transformed.I feel the most happy being involved in these experiences and conversations. It makes me feel apart of something.
