Conversations with Mike Acosta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Acosta.

Hi Mike, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a native Houstonian. I spent 22 years with the Houston Astros where I served as the team historian. One of the things I left was establishing the Astros Hall of Fame. After leaving the Astros due to layoffs during the pandemic in 2021, I worked for a local company as their Director of Brand and Communciations. Shortly thereafter I met Lisbet Newton, the founder of Houston City Beat in July of 2022 and we began a collaboration as partners in developing it into an independent media outlet.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Building a media outlet from scratch requires a lot of dedication. We produce everything ourselves between LIsbet and me. Houston City Beat is billed as the Storytellers of Houston and we have grown our network of contacts, business owners, PR folks, sponsors, and the audience across multiple social media channels and at our website. Our main challenge, as with any business, is maintaining financial sustainability. We are sponsor-based and it is crucial to have the support needed to do our jobs.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Altogether I am an artist, historian, and storyteller. I love to create. I draw, paint, build models, paint digitally, take photos, make videos, and love the creative process. Many people know me from my work with the Astros, but I am especially proud of the work done with Houston City Beat because this is something built from the bottom up. I’m very passionate about my work and dedication to it. The team that Lisbet Newton and I make is incredible. We were meant to do things together.

How do you define success?
To me success is a balance of impacting others in a positive way while maintaining a sense of personal satisfaction as you do it. That is the starting point of success. Then you add the hard work to building and respecting your craft so that it becomes something that sustains you and those around you.
