Conversations with Nina & Rachel Being A Mom Sucks Podcast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina & Rachel Being A Mom Sucks Podcast

Hi Nina & Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Rachel:
We first met when we worked at Edible Arrangements together. I had just started and Nina had just come back from a break. I remember I was nervous bc I thought Nina was so cool with her died hair and tattoos. However, I used to be super shy and was scared to talk to people so I think I mainly kept to myself. Then there was this moment when Nina put on some music and she played The Used and it instantly was like ohhhh yes! This is my girl! Haha and it just went from there. Fast forward to today and here we are, 17 years later.

Nina:
Yesss! We’ve been friends for 17 years!! One night after a concert, we were just talking about how we missed hanging out and how mom life completely takes over! We started talking about tough moments and how no one talks about any of that.

Rachel: Yes, so we decided we would be the ones to do it! We were venting and then it just came out…..Being a Mom Sucks!

Nina: We both were like OMG we HAVE to do this!!! The next day we ordered equipment.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Rachel:
I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road, every new adventure has obstacles. We actually tried to start a totally different podcast a few years ago and it just didn’t pan out. This time around though we both felt very passionate about this idea and commited to it. It is still a struggle at times since we both work full time jobs and are full time moms. Finding free time or free mental capacity to record or edit can be a struggle. I can get in my depressions where I just can’t deal but Nina is really great about helping me get motivated again. We just try to remember the goal, where we are trying to go and what we need to get there. Also, knowing the impact we are having on people who listens is really motivational. Sometimes you can feel like is this actually doing anything or does it matter? Knowing we have listeners who connect with us and we are helping to not feel alone is a huge motivator to keep going.
Nina:
What she said! lol I think the biggest obstacle has been consistency. Sometimes life is just too much and we can’t bring ourselves to create. It’s those moments that I feel need to be shared the most, however the Mom Guilt starts weighing in and we just shut down. We’re both trying to come to grips with the fact that we’re content creators technically and that in itself can feel intimidating. They are just so many great creators out here.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Nina:
I’ve been in the music industry for almost 10 years now. I’m currently at House Of Blues, you can find me in the Box Office! I specialize in ticket sales and customer service. I’m not sure if I’m best known for anything to be honest, I think people know I’m in ticketing so there’s always the occasional, “Can you get me in?” I guess I’m the plug for concert tickets lol I’m most proud of my family, I have 4 sons, who are literally THE BEST! A husband that is my best friend, supports every move I make and always backs up any crazy idea I have. He’s like what’s next babe- a book? Maybe! I couldn’t do life without my guys, I’m so grateful for them every single day.

I think what sets Rachel and I apart from others is our honesty. We don’t pretend to be anything we’re not. We don’t sugar coat anything and we’re sharing and creating a space where we can normalize the struggles moms face every day! Like it’s ok to want to scream at the top of your lungs, this shit SUCKS!! That invisible load is A-LOT!!

Rachel:
I work in insurance as a senior client service specialist. I work in property and casualty placements for middle to large commercial accounts. It’s not too terribly exciting haha! But outside of work the thing I’m most proud of is my son. He is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. I know that’s corny or whatever but it’s true. The one thing I have wanted most in my life was to be a mom and it was a tough road to get there. I am grateful for my husband joining me on this journey and making me a mom to the best little boy in the whole world.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Nina:
I told myself I was going to read more this year! I usually gravitate towards self help and motivational books, I also love true crime and scary stories. Crime Junkie, Are you Garbage, The Last Podcast on the Left and The Church of What’s Happening Now and of course my most favorite podcast is Being a Mom Sucks!!

Rachel:
I love to read and I try to read as much as I can when I have a moment to. However, I don’t know if I have a favorite book. I just read Verity and that was a pretty good one. I still think about that ending randomly. Housemaid was another good one. As far as podcasts, I listen to so many it’s hard to keep track haha! I mostly listen to true crime or spooky ones. Some of my favs are And That’s Why We Drink, Mr. Ballen, and basically anything from Wondery.
