Conversations with Ouhzie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ouhzie

Hi Ouhzie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Ouhzie and I’m the Co Founder of Trapboarding Collective. I’ve joined up with my brother Quasar two years ago. When I started skating I linked up with my boy Zoro to learn how to skate and it was just him and I at first. I eventually moved down south continuing to skate but I was hard, because everything is so far. I started seeing Zoro get posted on the instagram page Trapboarding and wanted to join. The fact that black men can link up and skate, have fun, and also be positive. I needed to be apart and help anyway I moved back to NYC to make this dream of having a crew a reality. One day Zoro connected Quasar and I and ever since it’s been beautiful. Helping kids get boards, teaching others how to skate, hosting community events to bring the Trapboarding Collective energy to everyone.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a fun road trip to success. We are still on that path with a long way to go. A lot of our experience is from in the moment conversations with people that want to work with us. We have worked with Addias, we have been on “Subway Takes” on instagram, we also done a black history month event with Vans and Harold Hunter foundation, we also work with Upper West Skates promoting local brands. With all of that and our collective only being 2 years old we have mad leaps and bounds to reach our dream together as brothers no matter the circumstances. So has it been a smooth road, so far so good and whatever struggles come up we will be able to handle it together.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I do at Trapboarding Collective is mc events, organize events, help build relationships with local businesses, teach all ages to skate, and also I bring ideas to the table. I am most proud of the work I do with Harold Hunter Foundation as a Trapboarding Collective member. I’ve got to teach kids how to skate and build a fire and passion for it. We take kids to Camp Woodward and Camp Reimagine. The kids feel safe around me, they thought me what being a mentor is, also how to listen to the younger one’s problems properly.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
We it’s not that they don’t know they just never seen it. I used to dance, I’ve performed on the Apollo, I’ve done a Addias commercial for dance, I’ve had documentaries about me in south by southwest, and I used to battle. But that experience in dance is why I can help out and Co founder.
