Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Dupuis.
Hi Rachel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m from a dairy farm on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I moved to Texas in 1999 for college and after 20 years, I now consider myself an honorary Texan. I am a graphic & web designer by trade (www.racheldupuis.com) and avant-garde painter/multi-medium artist. While I’ve spent the majority of my 20+ year career in corporate marketing design, lockdown pushed me back into my paintbrush and I have so much to do. My work is organic, raw, and experimental and definitely bold mix of elements of everyday life, emotions, and other experiences, feelings and ideas.
It took me a long time to call myself an artist. I used to question my art authority, or if I had met some invisible qualifiers. Now, that I am older (and still not much wiser) what being means to me is that I HAVE to create. No matter the medium, it’s all art to me.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Well, I tried! There is a lot of failure in my success. I am a lifelong scholar and the lessons and experiences of life have been plentiful. I am still learning how to do life right but I am enjoying every minute of it. I’ve struggled to find balance in my 9-5 corporate marketing and the need to satisfy my inner child by creating with my hands and a brush. Over the years, I’ve had some recurring ovarian issues resulting in several major surgeries, the most recent a full radical hysterectomy – what a PTSD nightmare that was. Ladies, go get your hoohoos checked!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a storyteller and I love DATA! I’d say I’m definitely known for my infographics. My favorite part of graphic design is using data to illustrate numbers, research, and other metrics to help the end-user digest and engage in new content by way of color and graphics. I often create infographics to support an idea with research, but I also use them in m my social media campaigns. I use bright bold colors that invoke feeling, thought, while telling a story and solving problem.
What are your plans for the future?
2021 has been a BIG adjustment and has been by far one of the more challenging years in my experience. I’ve had more time with a brush and have a ton of work that I am excited to show everyone in 2022 with some new upcoming shows. I have three pieces in my second show and I am looking forward to taking my painting to the next level. I’m currently obsessed with handpainted postcards and am planning to launch them at a couple of festivals in Houston this fall. I’ve been on my skates – I’m an avid roller skater and ‘blader. I look forward to closing the chapter of 2021 with gratitude.
I’ve been freelancing for the last couple of years and remote work really works for my lifestyle — I am excited that the traditional 9-5 role is evolving, especially for creatives.
