Conversations with Sarah Young

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Young.

Hi Sarah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It’s hard to believe that I’ve been a physician assistant for 6 years now! My initial interest in the medical field began at a very young age. My mom was a nurse for a prominent Houston plastic surgery practice, so I grew up around the operating room and surgical atmosphere. While I was initially planning to become a physician, I stumbled across the PA profession while attending undergrad at UT Austin, and I quickly decided to change my path. I was accepted into UTMB in Galveston where I underwent my graduate school training to become a certified PA.

Once I graduated, I started at my first job working in cardiovascular surgery as a first assistant in the operating room. This was a very challenging and rewarding field, but my heart just wasn’t completely in it. Ultimately, I decided it was time to make a change and pursue my true interest in cosmetic medicine. I have always had a passion for the aesthetic field and the role that it plays in making patients look and feel good about themselves. It’s truly unlike any other area of medicine because it allows for the practitioner to utilize medical skills while also exercising artistry and creativity, which I love! I was fortunate enough to find a position at a well-respected plastic surgery practice – and the rest is history! I have never looked back.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but as they say, nothing worth doing is easy! Attending PA school was without a doubt one of the most challenging things I have undertaken, but I am so proud of my training and the opportunities that it has afforded me. I’m also so grateful because it has allowed me to meet some incredible people along the way and encounter some amazing experiences that have helped shape me into the person and practitioner I am today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently work as a plastic surgery PA specializing in performing cosmetic procedures at Nuveau Plastic Surgery in Houston. While I have a strong background assisting in surgery, my true passion lies in performing noninvasive or minimally invasive treatments, such as Botox, dermal fillers, Sculptra and laser skin rejuvenation. I have now been performing these treatments for 3+ years, and when done correctly, they can work WONDERS for helping my patients achieve their cosmetic goals. It’s pretty incredible actually what can be done without surgery and the innovations that are constantly arising. The industry as a whole is very dynamic, and I pride myself on staying up to date on the most cutting edge advancements so that I can apply these to my craft and my patient base. As an aesthetic injector, I firmly believe that “the best injectable is undetectable,” and this is my mantra in my practice. I always want my patients to walk out of my chair feeling beautiful and refreshed, but never unnatural. It is a great honor that patients trust me with their beautiful faces and bodies, and I will never take this for granted!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson that I’ve learned along the way is to stay positive and believe that things are going to work out as they should. It can become very easy to let voices of self-doubt creep in or to succumb to negativity, but don’t do it! Surround yourself with positive energy and remind yourself that you can achieve whatever it is you put your mind to. God is in control!
