Conversations with Shereka “Ree” Burton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shereka “Ree” Burton

Hi Shereka, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my business on January 3, 2022. On this day, I literally woke up and God gave me the name. I immediately went to get my DBA. Leading up to this time, I was encouraged by a few of my peers to step out on Faith and start a Meal Prep business. The reason they encouraged me was because they seen how well I Meal Prepped for myself. With the encouragement I received I began to pray and talk to God. In the midst of consulting with God asking him, what is the name of my business should be he gave me the name: Ree Fit Meals & More. I knew that I wanted my product to be Meal Preps but the More in my business name is because I also cater as well. Since I’ve been in business, I did graduate culinary school in 2024. I was under the impression of being a self-taught Chef until the opportunity came to me where I could attend culinary school 100% free. I’m a Houston native and so I take pride with sharing Houston Meal Preps with my community. I believe that health is wealth and the best way starts with what you eat. So Ree Fit Meals & More offer chef prepared meals and catering services. To be totally transparent the pandemic is the reason why I start meal prepping for myself because that is when I started my fitness journey. I am not a fan of Fast food and prefer homemade meals. During the pandemic with all of my favorite restaurants closed. I was left with no choice but to cook the foods I missed eating. That’s how Ree Fit Meals & More came about.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In the business as a chef, it has not been a smooth road. With the pandemic ending and groceries increasing in price I literally watch the prices increase while my clientele is still trying to grow. So with that being said, I had to increase my prices so that I won’t be buying their food, cooking their food and not making a profit. So I did increase on the prices and with that it did give a tad bit of a balance, but the food costs steadily increasing.. So right now I struggle with keeping clients engaged versus clients that want McDonald’s and quick unhealthy food. The service that I offer is fresh never frozen served on a bit of spinach and people say that they eat fresh but they’re in the drive-through lines. So one of the biggest struggles is for me is to get clients to want to eat healthy and stay eating healthy even if they use my services for a little bit and then they began to Meal Prep for themselves. That will be me doing the job of Fit Meals and more. Cause A along the way, I do want to encourage and create an accountability community so that everyone will want to eat healthy and it can decrease the obesity in Texas starting in Houston.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, I am the chef that gives a fit. I make Chef prepared customize Meal Preps that are guaranteed FRESH never frozen. I do private dinners for two and cater events. One of the meals that I specialize in is my turkey meatballs. They are my number one seller. I’ve been known for networking, encouraging others, the healthy Cook and Meal Prep girl. So when I’m out in the Houston area, those are a few names that I’m recognized for. What I am most proud of is that I believed in myself and I take pride in my work. What sets me a part is my customer service that I provide to my clientele is superior. I give them the opportunity to customize their meals so that they will not get bored of the same Meal daily. Another benefit is that all my meals are served on a bed of spinach, freshly prepared 24 hours or less before delivery.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to keep God first and do not worry if family support your business or not. The clientele that God has stored up for me is for me. I’ve also learned to use the network of word-of-mouth and I also pass out my cards wherever I’m at. To be honest I’m very passionate about my business so, I have to learn when to network, when not to network and that’s been a lesson well learned this year. Use my God given discernment on the opportunities that are presented to me! Always be sure to have invoices paid in full before any service is rendered.
