Conversations with Sydney Planka

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Planka.

Hi Sydney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My painting journey began while attending Texas State University during the 2020 pandemic, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Advertising with a minor in Women’s Studies. In one of my Women’s Studies courses, our final project offered a choice: create a documentary, write an essay, or produce an original work of art. I chose to paint, a decision that became a turning point in my life.

For that project, I painted the figure of a woman in the shape of an hourglass, using time as a symbol of the resilience and hardships women have endured throughout history. My first piece explored the woven intersections between the female form and the weight of societal expectations. That theme has remained at the heart of my work, a constant thread woven throughout my artistic practice. I stand firmly in my womanhood, and my art continues to be a testament to both the strength and complexity of the feminine experience. As I painted, I realized that art could communicate emotion, truth, and human experience in ways that words alone never could.

What began as a single class assignment quickly evolved into a lifelong creative practice. Today, I work primarily with acrylic, watercolor, and oil on canvas. My process has become deeply intuitive, allowing me to unlock what I believe are sacred gifts and transform them into visual experiences for others. I see myself as a channel, translating what is felt but often unseen into imagery that invites reflection, connection, and wonder.

Creating art has become more than a passion. It is a calling. I believe creativity has the power to inspire, heal, and awaken something within us, and I strive to create work that encourages viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with themselves. I approach my practice with curiosity, humility, and an open heart, knowing there is always more to discover as I continue to grow as both an artist and a person.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This journey has not been a smooth road, but I have remained steadfast because I believe this is the path God has called me to walk.

Like many artists, I have faced my share of challenges, but the greatest has been fear. For a long time, I struggled to allow myself to be seen. I dimmed my own light, hiding both myself and my work out of fear of judgment and rejection. That began to change when I started sharing my paintings with close friends and loved ones. Seeing their eyes light up and witnessing the emotions my work evoked reminded me of the power of truth expressed through art.

Now, whenever fear begins to surface, I remind myself that light was never meant to be hidden. It lives within me, and within all of us. My hope is that through my work, others are reminded of that same light within themselves.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work explores themes of femininity, spirituality, and transformation through symbolic, intuitive paintings. I am drawn to creating pieces that invite contemplation and spark meaningful conversation, encouraging viewers to slow down and connect with both the seen and unseen aspects of themselves. Each painting is an expression of faith, intuition, and the belief that art can reveal truths that words cannot.

What I am most proud of is having the courage to finally share my work. For years, fear convinced me to hide both myself and my paintings. Choosing to step into my calling and allow myself to be seen has been one of the greatest transformations of my life. Every piece I create is an act of faith, trust, and surrender, bringing me closer to the artist God created me to be.

What sets my work apart is the intention behind it. I do not paint simply to create something beautiful. I create pieces that invite people into an experience. My paintings are rooted in symbolism, intuition, and spiritual reflection, offering viewers an opportunity to pause, connect, and discover their own meaning within the work. Rather than telling people what to feel, I hope my art creates space for them to remember something they already carry within themselves.

As I continue to grow, my goal is to create work that leaves a lasting impression, not because of its technique alone, but because of the way it makes people feel long after they have walked away.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a strong support system throughout my journey. My family has always encouraged me to continue pursuing my creativity, even when the path hasn’t always been clear. My friends have been there to celebrate the wins, encourage me through the difficult moments, and remind me why I started in the first place.

I’ve also been surprised by the support I’ve received from people I’ve never even met. Through sharing my work online, strangers have reached out with kind words, encouragement, and genuine interest in what I create. Those interactions have meant more to me than they probably realize. It’s a reminder that art has a way of connecting people, and that sometimes the smallest bit of encouragement from someone you don’t know can give you the motivation to keep going.

I don’t take any of that support for granted. Every person who has encouraged me, shared my work, attended an event, or simply taken the time to tell me they connected with something I created has played a part in helping me continue to grow as an artist.
