Conversations with Tarae Stevenson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tarae Stevenson.

Hi Tarae, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Played football all my life had a career-altering injury in 2017. Moved with my cousin Shakur Stevenson in 2018, started coaching in 2019, and we moved to Houston of 2020 during Covid. I decided to start my own clothing brand, and fast forward to 2022, I took over J Prince Boxing gym where I now work with 4 national champions as well as 2 of the best professional fighters in the world Jared Anderson and Shakur Stevenson.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Adversity I was faced with was I had to learn on the job as I went from a strength coach to boxing coach as well as traveling to new places having to network with so many new people all in the process of proving I belong in the boxing world. Also, I went from not having any fighters to a bunch of fighters which can be overwhelming, but I managed to weather the storm and stay calm to get the job done each time.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an entrepreneur as I own my clothing brand, run J Prince Boxing Gym as well as work with professional boxers. I’m known for my strength and conditioning; however, I have improved tremendously as a boxing coach as I work with both amateurs and professionals. I am most proud of helping the fighters reach their goals as champions as well as becoming better human beings. I also love to see how I inspire people by my story and what I have accomplished so far. I feel like what sets me apart the most is that I’m young enough to be an athlete, but I’m a coach, so I can relate to the athletes a lot different than majority coaches

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I’ve had good and bad luck, which taught me how to handle adversity because there will be times when there may seem like you can do no wrong and times when you feel like you can’t do anything right. No matter what type of luck it is you must keep going, and a loss is not a loss; it’s a lesson to remain humble when you win because you can lose at any moment
