Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrence Jordan.
Hi Terrence, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey, I’m Terrence Jordan aka Abstract Cannon. I was born in Fort Campbell, KY into a military family. Raised in Nashville, TN til I had to move to NY, Virginia Beach, and Georgia military bases. Ended up back in Nashville, and crunk was just taking off. I can remember being in my room, writing up strategies to own a record store.
Just like Tower Records or any other big shot music and disc store at the time. I would say 9 or 10 back in 2005 but I just knew I wanted to be not only an entertainer but a business-savvy entrepreneur.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes and no, actually. Because I didn’t have any backing as far as much money as anyone else in my neighborhood growing up. I did have a beautiful strong mom. An army Vet, she ended up becoming a Pharmacy Tech. Working hard every day even if she had to left me and my brother to stay at home till she came home around 7 or 8. After me and my brother would be done beating each other up, haha. She would always bring me home my favorable things and tell us to chill before She got in the middle of us. She talks me how to cook early. How to become a man as much as she could so that I had initiative early. Started learning how to producing in 2004, early millennium era. Releasing on TightBeatz and Soundclick. Real indie kids and beatmakers know. Then all of a sudden, in my last year of middle school, my mom wanted to move to Texas where the rest of my family was waiting. Ending up becoming dysfunctional. I love you, Grandma. But thru these trials, I became anew and started my own journey on making my true dreams come true. Or whatever that means….
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Abstract Cannon is the artist. Hmnbldgs . is the producer. WestsideGETtheMoney is my label. I’ve been releasing music independently since i was 14.
My first EP, Primary Consumer EP was released on Crash Symbols in 2011. It was pulled from the label in 2013.
I wanted to release thru them but I was too pushing about rushing my projects. I wanted to have many cassettes with them. I still love them and respect them to this day. a real indie label keeping the essence of the cassette tape alive.
Then onward, I released on SoundCloud, YouTube, and Bandcamp. Until I met some young people that were just as indie minded. As far as releasing, mixing and mastering, producing, promoting, setting up your own shows. Nowadays, that’s everyone. But as the coming century was approaching, it was going thru the Big Record Industry.
Wayward, a cat I had met thru mutual friends, introduced me to Danny Watts. Then, Danny Watts asked me to join his collective, New Thought Movement. We began work on my first release that I chose to rap entitled, Foam Mountains (March 12, 2012).
I’ve been the ultimate Master of none since I was young. Hip-Hop/Rap, Indie Chillwave, Rock. You name it: I have produced and mixed this everywhere I would lay my head. Me and the Laptop and nothing else
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
There are so many. So I’ll cut the stories. Fat Tony, Eric Dean, Danny Watts, Wayward. 4 people in my time in Houston that I definitely think we’re the most interictal voices that helped me find my true voice and business ethic.
