Conversations with Vera Cleveland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vera Cleveland.

Hi Vera, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my education career as a teacher. I thought I would only work in the classroom and advance no further. I currently am the sitting principal of an elementary school. This is a huge deal because of two factors: I’m black and a female. I hope to inspire students who look like me because representation matters!!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Landing a principal position was tough because most districts wanted someone who had principal experience (I only had overall admin experience). Also, some campuses may believe that a male can do the job better.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been an educator for 12 years. I am currently the principal of an elementary school. I specialize in curriculum and instruction. I love looking at data to drive my decision-making. I’m most proud of being the administrator of for the 2020-2021 school year! What sets me apart from others is my ability to lead with love. I’m big on building relationships and I believe that communication is essential. I can hold people accountable without being mean and rude. I would say that is my biggest strength.

What were you like growing up?
I was extremely shy growing up! Most people who grew up with me were very surprised that I became a teacher let alone a principal. I LOVED to read as I was growing up! I always had a book in my hands. Whether I was at school or home, I had to finish a novel. Sports was a favorite of mine as well. I loved watching/playing various sports.
