Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuliana Perez
Hi Yuliana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, my name is Yuliana Perez, and I’m a 20-year-old hairstylist. My passion for hair started in high school when I took a cosmetology course, which I completed while earning my diploma. This allowed me to become certified as soon as I graduated in 2023. What drew me to this industry was not only the creativity and transformation it brings but also the freedom to build my own business and make clients feel their best.
After high school, I began my journey in the beauty industry by assisting at a salon while juggling full-time restaurant work and college. Although I knew I wanted to pursue a career as a hairstylist, fear of failure held me back, so I continued my degree as a backup plan. However, after some time in the salon, I realized I wasn’t fully committing to my passion. That’s when I made the bold decision to leave my job and school to give becoming a hairstylist my full focus and a real chance.
After six months of assisting at the salon, I began taking my first models and transitioned into a commission stylist, which allowed me to grow my clientele. Six months later, I took the leap to be a booth renter stylist, which allowed me to be more independent. I fell in love with my work and started dedicating more time to building my brand and creating content on social media. I wanted to be more than just a hairstylist—I aimed to create a platform where girls could find fashion inspiration, aesthetic content, and a sense of connection with me. My passion for social media extended beyond hair, and I wanted to show that no matter your background, you can chase your dreams—no matter how daunting or impossible they may seem.
Modern Roots holds a special place in my heart; it has been a source of healing and a testament to how far I have come. The younger version of myself would be incredibly proud of the person I am becoming. Not only am I building my own empire, but I am also on a journey of self-discovery and healing. Every step I take proves to myself that I can achieve everything I once thought was beyond my reach.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth—I’ve faced personal obstacles that at times made my dream feel out of reach. There were moments of doubt when I questioned whether I had made the right choice and even considered giving up. Like any stylist, I’ve experienced slow seasons that made me second-guess everything. But no matter how tough it got, I kept pushing forward, trusting that everything would eventually fall into place. I was determined to become the person I aspired to be—no matter what.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a hairstylist specializing in lived-in color, haircuts, and hair extensions, best known for my Signature Haircuts and subtle balayage looks. What I’m most proud of is how much I’ve accomplished at just 20 years old—knowing this is only the beginning! My style and aesthetic go beyond hair, and I love expressing that through my social media. I believe the community I’ve built is drawn not just to my work as a stylist, but also to the other content I share, creating a deeper connection beyond beauty.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I would tell my younger self not to doubt herself or compare her journey to others in the industry. Success takes time, and if you truly want something, give it your all—you’ll never know what’s possible unless you try. Be proactive from the start by assisting and gaining as much hands-on experience as possible. Everyone starts at the same level, and patience is key to becoming a successful hairstylist. Don’t try to be like anyone else—stay true to yourself, and the right clients will find and follow you for who you are.
