Daily Inspiration: Meet Adrianna Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrianna Garcia.

Hi Adrianna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been fascinated with pastries since my mom used to share stories of working in a bakery in her youth. I ventured into the cake world around the age of 19 as a hobby and learned quickly that it takes a ton of patience and an endless supply of funds to cover the costs for my amateur cake business. I made cakes for mostly family members and friends however I realized that it came with unnecessary stress and I never saw a profit so I made some realistic changes and closed down shop (AKA mom’s kitchen). I had odd jobs in my early twenties while I was still deliberating whether I should finish getting my college degree and one of my favorite gigs was nannying. I have met some wonderful families in the Houston area and the life altering moment came when I met Bree. I was arriving for a shift and it was during the Halloween holiday and I saw the most adorable cookies on the kitchen island. It was a bat, spiderweb and a candy corn shaped cookie with animated faces on them. My interest was piqued and later that Christmas season, I tried my hand at decorating sugar cookies and the rest is history. Sort of. LOL

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When it comes to learning a new activity such as cookie decorating, the most cliche thing to say is that practice makes perfect. First I had to nail down a good recipe. Not only did it have to taste good, but it had to hold its shape and be firm and soft at the same time. I cringe at the first cookies I have ever sold and I just want to call that customer and give them free cookies for life for betting on me. Haha. Second, the icing also had to taste well and compliment the cookie since it is A LOT of sugar giving the sugar cookie its infamous name. I had an order early on where I added too much corn syrup in the icing and they did not dry in time for me to seal them in a cellophane bag. When I delivered them, I did not want to charge her but she was so kind and still paid me for my work. That’s the same customer I need to track down. LOL. Once I got that down, everything else came easy however there is a whole cookie world that I didn’t know could exist. I have not 100% put myself out there and that is something that I have struggled with along the way. It can be daunting comparing your work to the other amazing cookiers in the Houston area but I have such amazing customers who boost that extra confidence in me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My life didn’t exactly go along the path that I had envisioned for myself which really affected the course that I did end up taking. I almost ruined my undergrad career at the University of Houston due to personal conflicts which lead me to working odd jobs. During that time, I craved the stability in working a 9-5 office job and when that opportunity came to me I took it. I work for an ever-growing community health clinic in the heart of Houston and started out at the front desk. It was a humbling experience for me and within time, I have had many opportunities for growth. I am closing in on the 5-year mark with this amazing organization and will most likely continue my career in healthcare administration. This ties into my cookie business seamlessly because I have the creative outlet I need to advance on both sides even further.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned thus far is that life is short and you must go for it. Something that challenges you as well as scares you. When my mom was still with us, she always encouraged me to continue on my baking journey. I always thought that I will have the time to explore it but reality set in and I wish she could see the creations I have made today. She gave me the ultimate push and confidence to put myself back out there and create AddyCakesBakes.
