Daily Inspiration: Meet Al Sauls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Al Sauls

Hi Al , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Raised in a community of artists in Houston’s Third Ward, I witnessed many artistic practices. These distinctive practices inspired my icons and paintings. One of my early teachers was a Greek artist who would paint every Sunday. These paintings were a reference point for his later iconic works. The importance of spirituality, as explained in my artistic narrative, became paramount during my college years. During this time, I reconnected with my Catholic roots and began my journey of creating religious works.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, the road was tough. I had a lot to learn about myself and my craft. Many of my peers said that I would starve doing religious subjects while I was in art school. Most people shunned my ideas and considered me an outcast. I knew in my heart of hearts I was in the right frame of mind and I pursued what my heart and spirit told me to. I have now reconnected to my deep sense of faith and it has been rewarding,

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My specialty is icons, which takes lots of practice and discipline. I worked on writing icons for five years, and it has been a challenge but very rewarding for my faith.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m looking into getting into teaching and media dealing with teaching. I want to start a channel that teaches practical art techniques and writing icons. Hopefully, it will bring people closer to their faith and understanding of God. I am currently in the process of writing my lesson plan for these two main classes.
