Today we’d like to introduce you to Alfred Green.
Alfred, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Fashion saved my life and gave it a sense of purpose and now I utilize to help others see themselves through the lens of Christ. I quit my job in 2015, to walk the streets and help people. After feeding, providing haircuts, ministering to and distrusting clothes, I thought “What more could I do?” It was then, I discovered that there were some AMAZING gifts that slept under bridges. As a result, Dress Like You was birthed. It’s a fashion show that features homeless individuals, men or women returning from prison or individuals in transition. Once the full transformation is completed, then the “models” are free to display whatever gifts they had before life happened. We were blessed to have gifted singers, pianist, poets and a much more.
I feel like you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to look like a million and wanted to provide affordable fashion for individuals. That desire birthed Revealed Boutique a meticulously curated collection of fashion items and accessories that many individuals supported by donating gently used clothing. Due to my commitment to community, we’ve been blessed to receive clothing from local individuals as well as individuals, from abroad, that followed me via my social media outlets.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but the lessons or the wisdom I learned has taught me valuable lessons that I’m able to impart into others.
I was blessed with a brick n mortar (that’s right, didn’t have to pay anything to acquire the space) and Revealed Boutique was birthed. Not only did we provide affordable fashion, but we fed the homeless as well as distributing hygiene packets, provided free clothing for individuals who couldn’t afford proper attire for interviews (like a dress for success) and hosted a podcast and fashion show within the shop.
Word quickly spread and I felt like we were one of Houston’s best kept secrets and business started BOOMING.
Sometimes we get so excited about the blessings that we don’t do our due diligence when going into partnership with other people. One thing I learned was verbal agreements are great, but to provide added security for each party, a written contract/agreement needs to be formed. For 3 years we operated and made a huge impact in the community. Unfortunately, I had to part ways with the individual who’d gave me the keys because our hearts didn’t embrace the same overall mission I’d envisioned for the space.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Presently, I’m a fashion and interior designer as well as a published author. Through the various trials I’ve experienced, I took those lessons and poured it into a book I was blessed to write called Let’s Excavate which takes readers on a transformative journey beyond life’s chaos, helping you uncover the strength, wisdom, and purpose hidden within your struggles. Through raw transparency, personal stories, and powerful lessons, this book will challenge you to confront the unhealed parts of yourself, embrace growth, and step into the life you were meant to live. The pain of the past doesn’t have to define your future if you’re ready to do the heart work, healing and wholeness await.
I’m known for the before and after photos that I capture of individuals, helping them to see a side of themselves that’s escaped them. One of the most powerful things I heard after turning an individual around in the mirror, who was recently released after serving 24 years in prison, with tears in his eyes was “I feel loved!”
What sets me apart from others is my ability to create something out of nothing. As an Upcycler, I’m able to create beautiful garments from items people discarded. Additionally, not only am I able meet people where they are, but I posses a keen ability (gift) to assist in ushering them into a new landscape for their lives
What matters most to you? Why?
Seeing individuals reach their maximum potential. That’s important to me because at the age of 5 there’s was an assassination attempt on my life, by way of molestation and it impacted, affected and infected my life in so many ways, birthing stagnation. Now after years of digging through past traumas including (but not limited to) rejection, abandonment, homelessness, suicidal thoughts, HIV and depression, I’m able to utilize the pain of my past and transform it into a blueprint for freedom for others.
