Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Johnsen.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I never set out to work in insurance, but looking back, it feels like a very natural path. For almost eight years, I worked in operations and HR, where one of my favorite parts of the job was helping employees truly understand their benefits. I loved sitting down with someone who felt overwhelmed by all the jargon and options, breaking it down in plain language, and seeing that moment when they realized, “Oh, I get this now.”
During that time, I also witnessed firsthand how proper planning, or the lack of it, can deeply impact families. My father passed away without life insurance, and watching my family navigate not just the grief but also the financial strain left a mark on me. A few years later, my father-in-law passed, but because he had life insurance and had carefully planned ahead, his family could focus on grieving and honoring his wishes rather than worrying about costs and logistics. Experiencing both sides of that taught me just how powerful this work can be.
So when I had the chance to step out on my own, I became a licensed independent insurance agent. Today, I help individuals, families, and small businesses find health, life, and Medicare coverage that truly fits their lives — always starting with listening, not selling. It’s been incredibly rewarding to combine my HR background, my personal experience, and my passion for education to help people protect what matters most.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like most meaningful journeys, it definitely hasn’t been completely smooth, but I think those bumps are part of what’s shaped me into a better agent and business owner.
Starting my own business meant stepping away from the security of a steady paycheck and learning to trust in myself and my vision. In the beginning, it was challenging to find the right balance between being a mom, a wife, and an entrepreneur. Marketing myself felt uncomfortable at first, too, especially in an industry that sometimes has a reputation for being sales-driven, when my heart has always been in educating and guiding rather than pushing products.
I also quickly realized that being an independent agent comes with a lot of responsibility. Each client’s needs are unique, and keeping up with changes in regulations, plans, and markets takes constant learning. And emotionally, carrying my own experiences with loss means that some client conversations can feel deeply personal.
But every struggle has reinforced why I do this work: to make insurance simpler, more human, and more supportive for the people I serve. Looking back, the challenges have made me more empathetic, more creative, and more grounded in my mission.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an independent insurance agent specializing in health insurance (including Marketplace/ACA plans), Medicare coverage, life insurance, and supplemental benefits for individuals, families, and small businesses. What I really do, though, is help people feel informed and confident about choices that often feel overwhelming.
I’m most proud of the relationships I build with my clients. People often come to me feeling anxious or unsure, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see them leave our conversations feeling like, “Okay, I understand this now — and I know what to do next.” That moment of relief and clarity is what drives me.
What truly sets me apart is my commitment to education first. I don’t just quote numbers – I listen, ask questions about what matters to them, and explain the “why” behind each option in plain language. My goal isn’t to sell a product; it’s to help people protect what matters most, in a way that fits both their needs and their budget.
Beyond individual consultations, I also host educational workshops for those in my community. It’s another way to live out my mission of empowering people with knowledge and protecting them beyond just insurance plans.
At the end of the day, I’m most proud that clients know they can call me anytime — not just when they need to buy something. They know I’m here to support them, answer questions, and truly care about what’s happening in their lives.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I’m happiest when I feel like I’m making a real difference in someone’s life — whether that’s helping a client finally understand their coverage, guiding a family to protect their future, or seeing the relief on someone’s face when they realize they’re not alone in this process. Knowing that my work can bring people peace of mind is incredibly meaningful to me.
On a personal level, my family makes me happiest. I’m married with two boys who keep me laughing, grounded, and always moving forward. The little everyday moments with them — dinner around the table, weekend adventures, or just quiet time together — remind me why I do what I do.
I think it all comes back to connection: building genuine relationships, helping others feel secure, and being present for the people I love most.
