Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Burks.
Hi Andrea, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was younger, our family kept recipes in a tan recipe box. I remember reading through those recipes, realizing that they were simple ones that I could make on my own. Over the years I watched my grandparents cook for others and how much joy they inspired. I started baking for special events, as a hobby, then received more support over time. When I had the idea to make it all official, it wasn’t really a big jump. I took a few cookie decorating classes which birthed Whisk & Paintbrush.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I work full-time as a social worker and I’m a married mom with two kids, so juggling all of that with a home-based bakery can be challenging. There are just some limits to what I can do and when. Because I operate under Texas cottage laws, I’m also unable to ship cookies to potential customers who live outside of the state. I hope to eventually open a commercial kitchen so I can ship cookies nationwide.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in creating themed cookies for any occasion, special or otherwise, including graduations, tournaments, baby showers, and birthday parties. I’m most proud of being the person people think to call when they’re looking for something specially curated for their event. I’m a one-woman show and each cookie order is unique to the occasion and to the customer!
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Putting myself out there, experimenting with designs and flavors, is a big risk. I strive to be innovative while making sure the customers are satisfied with their orders.
