Today we’d like to introduce you to Antoine Griggs.
Hi Antoine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I attended Detroit School of Arts and a member of the Mosaic Youth Theater of Detroit. I was a part of a recording gospel group called Young Men Joined Together(Chosen Class). We opened for Spike Lee, Patti LaBelle, Marvin Winans, and Cathy Hughes. Those experiences in Detroit allowed me to further my education in music. I attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia , where I studied vocal performance and was a member of the world renowned Morehouse College Glee Club, under the direction of Dr. David E Morrow. Also, I had the opportunity to sing with the professional choral group “Uzee Brown Society of Choraliers” under the direction of Dr. Uzee Brown, Jr. After graduating from Morehouse College, I furthered my studies by receiving my master’s from Georgia State University and performed numerous opera roles, which include Marcello (La Bohème), Albert (Werther), and Frances Nurse (The Crucible).
Beyond national accomplishments, I have participated in the Siena Summer music program in Italy. I have always had a passion for music sense a young child hearing my mom sing and seeing her love music. I not only love classical music, but I have a wide range taste in music from hip hop to jazz. Music is my life. This continuous musical journey has brought me here to Houston, where I will continue my studies in music. Houston has a rich history in music and I am looking forward to the journey. I am the founder of AKG Music Studios where I teach several genres from classical to contemporary music.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has been some struggle throughout this journey from receiving rejection to financial difficulties. The most important thing is to never give up and always stay consistent. Also having mentors in your life who cares, always keep them close. You can’t walk the journey to success alone.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a classical singer, vocal teacher, and actor. I have taken a step into the business side of music where I manage recording artists. My goal is to help singers take their instruments to new heights and create healthy habits. What sets me apart is that I have more than one talent which diversified my gifts.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have to give credit first to God for guiding me throughout this journey. I don’t know where I would be without the support from my family, teachers, church family, and mentors. It truly takes a village to raise a child. Best advice I received was to never believe you can do it all on your own.
