Today we’d like to introduce you to Baylee Jasminoy.
Hi Baylee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My path into the beauty industry has been anything but traditional. Before becoming a hairstylist, I attended Texas A&M University at Galveston where I earned my Master’s degree in Maritime Administration and Logistics. After graduation, I spent three years working in the corporate world and even had the opportunity to live and work in Denmark at my company’s headquarters. While I was grateful for those experiences, I found myself feeling creatively unfulfilled and burned out much earlier than I expected. Deep down, I knew I was meant to do something more hands on, personal, and creative.
After moving back to the United States, I spent some time bartending while trying to figure out what my next chapter would look like. During that time of uncertainty, I kept thinking back to something that had always come naturally to me. Hair. Growing up as a cheerleader, I was always the one doing everyone’s hair for competitions, football games, and pep rallies. I spent hours in my room practicing on myself and on a mannequin my mom had gifted me for Christmas. Although I had considered cosmetology after high school, I chose the more traditional college route instead.
Eventually, I realized that passion never really left me. At 28 years old, going back to cosmetology school felt intimidating, but it also felt right. Throughout school, I apprenticed while continuing to grow my skills and confidence, and after becoming licensed, I continued apprenticing to refine my craft even further. My original plan was to work in a salon environment, but I quickly realized I wanted more flexibility, creativity, and autonomy than a traditional setup could offer.
That realization pushed me to take a leap sooner than expected and start my own business. I opened my suite in downtown Galveston, and the support I’ve received from both my clients and the community has been overwhelming in the best possible way. Building my business from the ground up has taught me so much about leadership, resilience, and trusting yourself even when the path looks unconventional. Every step of my journey, from corporate offices in Denmark to behind the chair in my own salon suite, has shaped the stylist and business owner I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was figuring out what came next after leaving the corporate world. I had built a career that looked successful on paper, so walking away from that stability to start over in a completely different industry was scary and filled with uncertainty.
Going back to cosmetology school was also intimidating at times. Many of the students were coming straight out of high school, while a lot of people my age had already been established in the beauty industry for years. It was hard not to compare myself or feel behind, but I learned that my previous experiences gave me a level of discipline and resilience that really helped me grow.
Another major challenge has been building a clientele completely on my own and opening a business in a smaller town like Galveston where the beauty industry can feel very saturated. Learning how to market myself, earn trust, and run a business all at the same time has pushed me in so many ways, but it has also been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey. I believe every difficult situation pushed me closer to building a career and life that feels much more authentic to who I am.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hairstylist and salon suite owner specializing in customized color, blonding, dimensional brunettes, and lived in hair that feels effortless and tailored to each client. For me, hair is such a creative outlet because every person is different, and I love creating looks that enhance someone’s natural features while still feeling personal to them.
What I’m most proud of is building my business completely from the ground up and creating a space in downtown Galveston that feels welcoming, creative, and authentic to me. Growing a loyal clientele through genuine relationships and trust has been incredibly rewarding.
I think what sets me apart is my unconventional path into the industry. Coming from a corporate background gave me a different perspective, but it also made me appreciate the artistic side of this career even more. I bring both creativity and intention into my work, and I genuinely care about creating hair that makes people feel confident, inspired, and like the best version of themselves.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are from growing up in New Braunfels and spending endless summers at the river. I was outside constantly, whether it was floating the river, being with friends, or just enjoying that carefree feeling that comes with growing up in a small town surrounded by nature. I also grew up visiting Galveston often with my family, so it feels very full circle that life eventually brought me back there. Those memories still shape so much of who I am and inspire the laid back, creative lifestyle I try to build today.
