Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Davis
Hi Brandi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I from Augusta, Ga. The second largest city in Ga and home of the masters. I started doing hair when my mom taught me how to braid around the age 8 or 9. And I started braiding hair for friends and doing my own hair in 6th grade. Seeing as how we didn’t have social media or YouTube, my clients came from referrals and word of mouth. I started college at Albany State University in 2006 in Albany, Ga ,and while there I did hair in my dorm and later in a braid shop and then Tabernacle Beauty Salon where I got most of my experience and hands on teaching. After returning home, I did hair at home what we call “ a kitchen Beautician, after a few years and a couple of nudges and a helping hand from a good friend I began my Apprenticeship to acquire my Masters Cosmetology license, which means being licensed to perform, barbering, cosmetology, nails, and esthetician services.
I earned my Master Cosmetology license in Georgia and opened my own suite in 2021. After running my suite I chose to step out on faith and pursue a goal that I’ve had on my list for years. I moved to Houston after being a traveling stylist back and forth for a year. It has not been without its. Challenges, but it has proven to be worth it for myself and my kids. now I’m a Licensed Master Cosmetologist in Georgia and Texas.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t call the road smooth, however I’d don’t expect it to be. Being a single mother isn’t easy on any day & I refused to choose between giving up on my goals and dreams to be a mom. My philosophy was different! I wanted my kids to see me take on challenges and conquer them, to persevere no matter what, and know that they to can do hard things! I worked 40 hrs a week and would pick them up feed them go to church and their extra curricular activities and still go home, do homework, and do hair. I also tried opening a beauty supply store while earning my license, working and moming. Even though I had a building and had done some work, It ultimately fell through. Nevertheless less I persisted and earning my license and becoming a full time entrepreneur took a lot of faith and it has given me the freedom to mom and live life on my own terms and time.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a master cosmetologist by official title. I’m also known as a hairstylist, beautician, and most of all an artist who is passionate about her artistry! I specialize in healthy hair! I always emphasize that although I can do all types of styles. My goal is, if you wear your hair natural, make sure your scalp is in good condition and shown love and that your hair is hydrated and in a state or moving to a state of retention and if I am installing additional hair, make sure that the hair is treated and in good condition underneath the install. I am known for my shampoos and my attention to your hair and scalp health. I am most proud of the love and attention that I show to my clients through how I clean the hair and the time and attention I seek to give all my clients. My technique, attention to detail, and connections that I build with every client sets me apart.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Anytime I’ve asked someone to be my mentor, we couldn’t coordinate or it naturally just didn’t work out. For me I noticed that I was being connected to impactful people who either directly or indirectly gave me wisdom nuggets and caused me to evaluate and hold myself accountable for my goals. Ultimately I would say let it happen organically when it comes to a mentor. As for networking, I look up events in event bright and join Houston groups on social media to stay in the loop.
