Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb D. Gordon.
Hi Caleb, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Being a stand up comedian was definitely not in my future. If you would have told me years ago, that stand up comedy was something I was going to make a career out of I probably would laugh. I have always been that outgoing funny guy growing up, especially in school. I was always a class clown and had others laughing nonstop. It did not matter where you put me I was the loudest one whether it was in front of the class, back of the class, or even outside of the classroom. I remember once I graduated college back in 2016 I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, I just knew I had a way of making people laugh. Some of my best friends I made in college really pushed me to do standup, they really believed I could be successful at it. In reality, they were just tired of hearing me make jokes all the time and one day they just told me to go get paid for it. I prayed and asked God to show me my gift and what my talent truly was. I decided to go to an open mic night at the Houston Improv which was the first time I’ve ever picked up a mic. I remember how it felt the first time I did it and I was horrible lol…in comedy terms we use the word “bombed” and that’s exactly what I did. From that moment, I knew it was something I wanted to do if I just put the time and work in to actually learn how to be a stand up comedian. Who knew that standing up in front of strangers telling jokes would be such an exciting feeling. It truly has become a strong passion of mine and I have no plans of stopping or slowing down anytime soon.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Doing stand up definitely has it days where the road is not so smooth. There are definitely struggles throughout the journey if you take the craft seriously, but you learn a lot along the way. Some of the struggles I faced were the times it get slow. You may have gaps in between when it comes to being booked consistently. Sometimes you wonder, am I funny enough? Why am I not being booked as much as I want? Those are things that happen when you’re freshly in. I’ve been doing it for 4yrs now and it can be discouraging at points.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m also a school teacher as well. I’m known mainly for my stand up. I’m most proud of the hard work and dedication I put towards in building my stand up career and trying to make a bigger name for myself. In just my short time of doing comedy, I have had the opportunity to be able to tour and currently still touring with certain individuals. I think what sets me apart from others is my humility.
How do you think about luck?
Wouldn’t necessarily say luck I would just say God’s blessings have allowed me to experience certain things in my life. God has shown favor and I thank him for that.
