Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Waller.
Hi Carolyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a Houston native, born and raised, and at 36, I can confidently say this city has my whole heart. I grew up between the north side, Alief, and Cypress, where I finished school before spending a couple of years at Houston Community College figuring out what I really wanted out of life. I was raised by my mom( Renee) alongside my big sister ( Ashell) , and the foundation she built in me is everything.
My early 20s were a whirlwind in the best way. I bartended and waitressed during the nights and weekends, modeled with groups around the city, and appeared in music videos for Houston legends like Slim Thug, J-Dawg, and Paul Wall. Photography has been a love of mine since I was a kid, and that creative side has always stayed with me — these days it lives mostly on Instagram, which is my happy place. I especially love doing voiceovers for my posts, and based on the feedback, it seems like everyone else loves them too.
Eventually, life pointed me in a new direction. I became a traveling nurse assistant during COVID and haven’t looked back since. The work has taken me to Oregon, California, Hawaii, and beyond. Travel contracts aren’t for everyone, but I love what I do and the places it’s shown me.
Outside of work, I’m outgoing, a people person through and through — a former cheerleader and track kid who still loves talent, dancing, and a good movie night (I’ll forever miss Blockbuster). Houston is it for me — the culture, Sunday Funday, the slabs, screw music, a good drink in the Galleria — there’s nowhere like it. Family time is sacred to me, and for the record: I’m single, no kids, and happily keeping it that way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, no — it hasn’t always been smooth. Bartending and waitressing were fun in my 20s, but as I got older, I started wanting more for myself. Reality hit: this isn’t going to cut it, and it might not pay the bills long-term. Houston also makes it tough to even get behind a bar these days — it’s like you need a whole degree in bartending just to get hired. That pushed me to figure out my next move.
That’s when I shifted into traveling as a nurse assistant, and once I made that leap, things really started falling into place. The work challenged me, the travel opened me up to new places and people, and I finally felt like I was building something that matched the life I actually wanted.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a traveling CNA, so I go to different states for work — every assignment brings new patients, new cities, and new stories. It’s interesting work, but honestly, it’s not what I’m known for. I’m known for being in front of the camera — modeling, photography, and the voiceovers I post on Instagram.
What I’m most proud of is the network I’ve built along the way. Between traveling for work and connecting with people everywhere I go, I’m laying the foundation for something of my own down the line. I’m outgoing, consistent, and I move with purpose.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Yes, definitely! I recently read The Game of Life and How to Play It and it was a total game changer — I’m big on manifestation, and that book really tied it all together for me. Let Them by Mel Robbins is another amazing read, and The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison is one TikTok put me onto and I’m so glad it did.
App-wise, ChatGPT and Claude have been game changers — I’ve literally been locked in the house for a month going down the rabbit hole, lol. For podcasts, I love Poor Minds and Baby, This Is Keke Palmer.
