Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Poleon.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started doing my own hair during my teenage years. I learned a few things from my mama and my grandma, who is now a retired hairstylist. They used to do my hair all the time, but the times they couldn’t do it or afford to get it done. I started watching YouTube and self-taught myself. I learned how to do natural styles first, and also quick weaves with the invisible part was my go-to. After I graduated high school, I enrolled into Cosmetology a year later (2013). Then completed Cosmetology in 2014, and over time I’ve worked with some of the best hairstylist and wigologists in Houston, TX. I’ve been doing hair for over 10+ years, as the time went by, I have leaned towards the makeup side. I love makeup because I can really be creative and be the artist I was destined to be. I have done many photo shoots, weddings, parties, sets, Halloween looks, etc. I love expressing myself through my work and my clients. My goal is to one day have my own product/products. Makeup is peace for me; I can’t wait to show you guys more of what I love to do and give you the Unique experience.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some struggles along the way in this beauty industry was working with other stylists/artists who already owned a shop/suite. I’ve noticed when working with/for other people; they will take advantage of you and your skills and use you for their own convenience. And sometimes, not pay you what you’re worth. I’ve worked with women who didn’t appreciate me or the work I was putting out to where it forced me to not want to create or work with someone again. So since then, I move on my own wave, but I do hope to one day partner up with other stylists/artists soon.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in natural hair and protective styles. I’m known for my knotless braids when it comes to hair, styling, my neat parts, and taking my time with my work. When it comes to makeup, I’m known for always adding a pop of color somewhere, slaying eyebrows, and creating unique natural looks for my clients. I’m most proud of my journey and what it has taught me along the way. I have learned so much about people in general, and my customer service skills have improved tremendously. What sets me apart from others is my sense of style, my conversation, my uniqueness, and the way I cater to my clients.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
My view on risk-taking is basically trusting God and stepping out on faith, but not moving till God says so. That and prayer has stuck with me along this journey; it has taught me so much patience as well. The times where I did take risk was the times I settled for less. And my advice is to never settle for less, make sure the people you’re involved with appreciates you, your work ethic, and what you bring to the table as a hair stylist/artist.
“Keep pushing no matter how hard it gets, it will pay off in the end. Don’t waste the talents you’ve been blessed with. Be you, be unique and show the world who you are; no matter if it’s working in the beauty industry or doing something else.”
