Daily Inspiration: Meet Christopher Curran

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Curran

Christopher, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From London originally, I graduated with a degree in Physics from Bristol University. I spent over 40 years working in the oil and gas industry as a subsea engineer, retiring from a full time career in 2016. I started windsurfing in my 20s while on holiday in the Greek Islands. I took my first sailing lessons starting in 2006.

In the summer of 2020 with the pandemic, life changed for many people. For Christopher living alone as a widower he decided to recreate his retirement. First by becoming as sailing instructor now teaching 6 different courses, and then getting his captain’s license in 2021 and establishing Sailing Adelaide as a charter company.

Like many of the best captains, Captain Christopher has the mind of an engineer and the soul of a sailor. He brings an easy-going British charm to Adelaide, which makes guests feel instantly at-home. However, underneath that easy-going exterior, he is an extremely skilled captain. That means you can relax, knowing you are in great hands.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Following a career in engineering working on mostly projects and new technology, starting a sailing charter company was a very different departure. From building website to planning marketing campaigns it has resulted in learning new skill sets to move the business forward. The past 4 years have been a steady progression of working to grow the business, building new business relationships for web development and marketing support. We have seen a slow but study increase in business but there is still more room to grow.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I could answer this in 2 ways, my profession career or my sailing business. Happy to discuss which way to take this, for sailing I have probably already covered this. I look forward to your feedback?

How do you think about luck?
I truly do not believe in luck, I think you make your own luck. For me in a career it is much more about creating opportunities and not being prepared to settle for being a couch potato. That is why in the summer of 2020 I decided to do something about my environment and start the journey to become a sailing instructor and then a licensed Coast Guard Captain so that I could start a sailing charter company.
