Daily Inspiration: Meet Daisha Calliet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisha Calliet.

Hi Daisha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Daisha, but most people call me “Dai” (day). I am a 21-year-old visual artist and creative from New Orleans, LA. I have loved art since I was old enough to hold a crayon. When I was seven years old, I decided that I wanted to be an artist when I grew up, and now all these years later, I am finally able to pursue my dream. I got started out in art classes early on and have been painting ever since. In high school, I was in what they would call the advanced art classes, and that is where I started to take my art more seriously. I’m grateful for those classes and the teachers because it gave me a good understanding of the technicalities in art and helped me to find my style by experimenting, especially through the many different mediums. I fully indulged my curious edge and became comfortable in mixing different techniques in one piece. I was also taught the benefit of having an artistic style that becomes consistent and recognizable, and that advice really influenced me in my own art and now my brand. My brand, “DaiDaiTheArtist,” is all about connecting with your inner child. With portraits that look like they jumped right off a coloring page, you can embrace the boldness and fearlessness that comes with being a kid. I want my art to be fun, playful, and captivating, and that is why I have so much fun playing around with colors. I find a lot of my inspiration in music. Most of the muses for my portraits have been musician artists of some genre or another. I always listen to music when I paint, ALWAYS, it both motivates me and inspires me. I am spreading out my reach now for my muses because I want to start expanding my portfolio to include the lovely people around me as well. That is a little bit about me and what’s up next for me, I hope you enjoy my art.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been much of a road at all, more like trudging through on dense jungle. For one, juggling my art and now a business with being a 21-year-old trying to figure out how to be an adult, a college senior, a business owner, a dog mom, and a plant mom all at once is enough to put on anyone’s plate. But no, really, in all seriousness, there have definitely been struggles along the way but with each struggle came a lesson on how to do things better the next time. I don’t regret any of the setbacks i have faced because they have only made me stronger, a little smarter, and more convinced of just how bad I want this passion to become my reality. It has not been a smooth road, but it is a road that I am currently paving for myself.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a visual artist and creative. My specialty is abstract mixed-media portraits. I create large scale portraits that resemble a coloring book. Using my artwork, I also design home decor, clothing, and accessories . I am known for my original portraits and my “wearable art,” as I call my clothing. I also make some really pretty and soft fleece blankets that I am most proud of, so if you love being cozy you should definitely check them out. My use of color is what really sets me apart. You’ll know a Dai Dai original when you see it… trust me.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I am learning to go with the flow of the universe, but I am more on the anxious side, so I prefer to avoid risks by having a plan. I’ve learned that with things like this, where there is no handbook, you can’t really avoid risks. With that being said I am learning to be more open and flexible with whatever curve balls life may through at me. I surround myself with wisdom and support, I call them my village, but it is usually these people who keep me grounded even when I’m not too sure of myself. Having their support makes the risks feel a lot less risky. I truly believe that having a good support system is really the best way to go into a risk with full confidence.
