Daily Inspiration: Meet Dj Savage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Savage.

Hi Dj Savage, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So, I moved back to Houston in 2016 after serving four years in the army, about six months after returning, I decided to turn my hobby into a career which is dj’ing. I networked with prominent people in nightlife in Houston, then used those relationships to get Dj opportunities for myself. I’ve been dj’ing in the city consistently for five years now and I believe the nightlife community is pretty familiar with me by now. Of course, not everyone knows me, but I try to diversify my sets so that I’m liable to end up anywhere spinning. That way, I can play for multiple crowds and more people can be familiar with me. I still have a long way to go in this industry, but I’m proud of my accomplishments thus far.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To be quite honest, everyone’s journey is completely different. For me, every moment hasn’t been the best, there are some awkward/uncomfortable moments being a female in the industry. However, I have had more good experiences than bad. Luckily I have chosen my surroundings wisely, people treat me with respect for the most part. You have to know who you are in this industry, that cuts down on how much you will allow yourself to get played.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a DJ/Producer. I am an open format artist, meaning I spin multiple genres. My specialty genre is RnB, however, I do not have a favorite genre. I am not sure what I’m known for since I do multiple genres, but I do plan to research that for my own curiosity. What I am most proud of is my ability to read a room and create a set list based on the vibe, it’s really fun creating and maintaining a vibe for a whole room of people, you get to really control the energy. I am most proud of that beyond any accolade.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I believe risk-taking is necessary to grow. That can be applied to any area of your life. Taking chances can lead to so many unknown benefits. I can always feel when am getting comfortable and not pushing myself enough, and when I get that feeling, I force myself to do something uncomfortable, like go dj in another state or book a gig in front of a large crowd, etc. just to shock myself back into a mode where I’m hungry again. Taking risks helps to make things more spicy in my opinion. It shakes things up and forces you to get better.

I took a major risk when I started dj’ing in New York, it was a whole other market than what I was used to and I had no experience and no friends in that state whatsoever, but I went and eventually found my way, now I spin in NYC regularly. It was a huge risk to leave a market that I’m familiar with and successful in and go to another one where I’m back to rookie status, but it’s been super worth it. Happy I took that risk, its opened many doors.
