Daily Inspiration: Meet Felicia Pichon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Felicia Pichon.

Hi Felicia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Life is a precious gift, one we must cherish. In August 2021, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and by October, I attended my first breast cancer event as someone personally affected. It was there I learned the shocking reality: the survival rate for Black Indigenous Women of Color (BIWOC) was devastatingly low, and in Harris County—home to the world’s largest medical center—it was even lower than the national average, hovering at just 50%.

During my recovery, I knew I had to take action. But how? And what could I do to make a real difference? From this urgency to change the trajectory of health outcomes for women like me, Sisters Thrive was born.

The same disparities and racial inequities I witnessed while working in the educational system were painfully clear in healthcare. Our goal at Sisters Thrive is to bridge that gap by advocating for health equity and ensuring that BIWOC don’t just survive, but truly thrive. We encourage women of color to prioritize themselves, to “put on their own oxygen masks first,” and then use their voices to amplify the call to action in their communities—advocating for holistic well-being of mind, body, and spirit.
Then in 2022 my friend lost her 34 year daughter to breast cancer and I lost my cousin/5th daughter to a blot clot within 2 months of each other. These losses were deep and painful. They almost took me out. It was through that experience I realized access to equitable health care was the bigger picture and I decided to really focus on women of color and our overall health, (physical, emotional & financial). I host mental wellness events around the city. We are launching a program to assist single mothers in the Sunnyside, South Park and Hiram Clarke communities as well as an initiative to support female veterans from the Houston Metroplex.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a difficult road because you don’t know what you don’t know. I am a former educator and I did not understand the power of networking and having a network, so this has been a work in process. Building the plane while in flight. I am still learning and I am aligning myself with those who have been doing this work for longer than me in addition to getting a coach to help in the process.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Sisters Thrive does monthly walks to get our bodies moving along with a creative art experience in an effort to focus on MBS (Mind, Body & Spirit). Bimonthly we host a Big Hat Worship and Brunch experience at South Union Church of Christ with brunch following at RADO Mkt. We do a 5K de Pink along with our tour de Pink every October to raise awareness for Breast Cancer and to get the word out that early detection is the key to survival. Sisters Thrive has also hosted Beautiful Brown Girls Retreat at Herman Park, Brunch & Bling, International Black Women’s Day every July, Shine Effervescently, Galentines, Friendsgiving and Friendsmas around Htown.
Memorial Day weekend of 2026 Sisters Thrive will host our 1st annual Mother’s Day Getaway in Cancun for Mothers & Aunties to take the time for them to recalibrate because we have to put on our oxygen masks first before we can help anyone else.
Over 2–3 years, Sisters Thrive will engage communities, address health disparities, expand services, and scale outreach—building lasting equity and improved health outcomes for Black women through trusted partnerships.
We love collaborations and volunteers.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Collaboration is the key. Find someone who is doing what you are doing or similar to and seek mentorship from them. Get a credible coach. Join a network/mastermind, it’s lonely out here.
